IN THE 20s, it was built
as a grainery . . . Then in
1932 it was a bar called
Country Tavern . . . 1948
saw it as Fred's Bar . . . and
Oba's bar in 1965.
This is the site history of
what in 1979 became
Ginopolis' . . . seating about
100 if that . . . serving good
ground rounds and chili .. .
on the corner of 12 Mile and
Middlebelt . . . owned by
George Ginopolis and sons
John and Peter.
Not much time elapsed
before it started becoming
too small . . . and finally, on
Dec. 19, 1982, anew, totally
unfamiliar Ginopolis'

Valet gents were parking
cars all over the large area
. . . It seemed like some-
thing big was going on .. .
There was . . . Ginopolis'
was open.
The inside is also unbe-
lievable . . . hard to envision
such a transformation . . . so
different and startingly
realistic as young and old,
casual and dressed, basked
in the action-filled fun of a
Ginopolis' with its over
$1,000,000 new look.
Disco and soft rock music
is played by an on-premises
disc jockey . . . not too loud
or overbearing . . . and easy
beats in the large room with
its excellent acoustics.
There's a dance floor in
the center that original
plans had called for
being raised . . . How-
ever, a handicapped per-
sons department in Lans-
ing said John and Pete
couldn't have a raised
floor without a ramp for
people in wheelchairs to
get onto and dance .. .
Sound strange? . . . The
boys aren't alone in not
being able to understand
it.

CHOP
I was there on a Mon-
day evening, normally
considered a bad night in
the restaurant nitery
game . . . and couldn't be-
lieve my eyes . . . For a
moment, I thought it was
another place . . . cer-
tainly not Ginopolis' ...
But a brilliantly-lighted
sign assured me that
there was no mistake.
GOLDEN BOWL
dining room, carry-out and trays
lincoln shopping center, 10Y2 mi. & greenfield, oak park
opened at the same locale
seating 175 with a
capacity for 370 including
standing . . . which John
and Pete are getting plenty
of.
•
Thirty-one lamp shade
fixtures are over all tables
. . . with a huge chandelier
and mirrored ceiling above
the dance floor . . .
Everywhere is solid oak .. .
the large arc bar, tables,
walls, partitions, etc. . . .
$100,000 worth of just oak
wood . . . Nine fan fixtures
whirl in rhythm.
Ginopolis' inside and out
is the design of Ken
Rudinski, who grew up with
John and came in from San
Diego as somewhat of a
favor to his boyhood friend.
The huge expanse of
8,000 square feet still re-
tains a look of intimacy .. .
with its nine booths plus
regular and standup island
tables.
Where did the 8,000
square feet come from?
The old Ginopolis'
was only about 1,500
square feet ... Trees
were cut and a house torn
down to make an entire
three acres the beautiful
Ginopolis' of today.
The employees are so
pleasant . . . eager to please
. . . caught up in this new
excitement . . . like Rick
Rogow, a son of Emily and
Sonny Rogow, evening host.
You didn't get too much
more than a hamburger or
chili at Ginopolis' back in
1979 . . . but oh what a dif-
ference now . . . Imagine a
menu from nine different
hamburgers . . . to pizza .. .
to salads . . . to flaming
saganaki and other Greek
dishes . . . to nachos . . . to
pastas . . . to Steak Diane
. . . to ribs . . . to chicken and
veal . . . to six seafood items
including red snapper
broiled in white wine and
lemon juice, garnished with
toasted sliced almonds .. .
or sole Florentine with sea-
soned white wine and stuf-
fed with spinach . . .
Ginopolis' homemade soups
1
and chili . . . etc., etc.
This can't be the same
Ginopolis' . . . Yes it is .. .
then again, no it isn't .. .
Whichever the confusion,
John and Pete have done
their dad, George, right
proud.
He passed on and never
saw its completion . . . but
his wife, Florence
Ginopolis, proudly looks
about and sees a piece of
him . . . George may be
gone, but is still there
seven days and nights a
week . . . Ginopolis' is a
tribute to John's and
Pete's dad . . . His name is
in gold leaf above the
large bar . . . and a pic-
ture of him hangs near
the glass sectioned doors
as customers enter or
leave.
In front of the menu,
John's wife Marion, wrote
. . . "In Farmington Hills
there was a pub for many
and many a year. Custom-
ers came as they were for a
hamburger and beer.
"Meanwhile, a father and
his two sons were looking
for some space on which to
build a restaurant, this lit-
tle pub was the place.
"They operated as it was
until it burst its seams. And
then they built a spacious
one, this was Dad's lifelong
dream.
"George Ginopolis
didn't live to see his
dream fulfilled. But to his
memory and in his name
Ginopolis' was built.
" 'My sons, to gain respect
from others you must re-
spect them, too. Treat all
customers the same.' Ba-
ba's words we still hold
true.' "
A lot of dreams have been
fulfilled with the new
Ginopolis' . . . It's truly the
Cinderella turned into a
beautiful princess . . . and
indeed no fairy tale.
"NUTS" BECOMES the
first non-musical produc-
tion ever to be extended at
the Birmingham Theater
. . . Originally slated to
close Sunday, the provoca-
tive dramatization of a san-
ity hearing, starring Pat-
ricia Morrison and Guilia
Pagana, will be held an
additional week through
Feb. 13 to accommodate the
large demand for tickets.
FIRST APPEARANCE

field in Southfield, just

it's the first time Ron has

Raven Gallery closed on
Greenfield and 12 Mile .. .
