He spoke on the topic "Jewish Medical Ethics" at the med- ical school's fourth annual Myer Teitelbaum Memorial Lecture. But for Jews, there is no over-population; there is a bigger problem of popula- tion shrinkage. Chaikin will be cited for his "longstanding and un- swerving support of quality higher education and health care delivery in our society." "This new life then has exactly the same claim to life as any other existing human life." The unborn child has what Jakobovits calls a "relative right to life," meaning that a living per- son, the child's mother, has priority over the life of the unborn child. An abortion is allowable only in the case of a life-threatening situation for the mother, he said. Similarly, Jewish med- ical law condones con- traception only for strong medical reasons, but not for purposes of convenience. Brandeis, Hospital Cite Chaikin 1/2 OFF on SEALY POSTUREPEDIC TO NAME A FEW: Congregations of the British Commonwealth, explained how Jewish law deals with the problems of medical ethics in life and death situations. He defined human life as being "infinite in value," and because of this infinity, no human life is worth any more or less than another human life. He said it is the obliga- tion of every doctor to do all he can to preserve the human life, even if the patient doesn't want to live. "We are not the makers of it (our life), therefore we cannot be the un-makers of it." Jakobovits further stated though, that when there is no more hope for a patient, there is no more need to prolong the patient's agony with arti- ficial life-sustaining methods. Rabbi Jakobovits also spoke about death, saying the value of human life ceases with death. He de- fined death as the cessation of all essential life func- tions.
