Begin Asks Hussein to Join Peace Process

Minister's 1983 Israel Bond
Organization conference
Saturday night. He said

peace more than the people
of Israel. But, he added, the
Jewish people have an in-
alienable right to live -in Is-
rael "in all its parts."
President Yitzhak Na-
von, addressing the confer-
ence delegates earlier at a
meeting in the Presidential
residence, observed that
PLO chief Yasir Arafat tells
the Western press and dip-
lomats he is willing to live
in peace with Israel but says
just the opposite in his mes-
sages to the Arab people.
Navon said that -in reading'
the Arabic press he found
that the PLO leaders adhere
faithfully to their charter
which calls for the elimina-
tion of Israel.
On the subject of Is-
rael's peace treaty with
Egypt, Navon said that
while President Hosni
Mubarak supports the
peace process, the Egyp-
tian press is conducting
an anti-Semitic campaign
which includes cartoons
that could have come
from Julius Streicher's
Nazi press.

tributors to the Mediterra-
nean - Dead Sea Canal, a
major hydro-electric proj-
ect.

The cells, now joined together,
Continue to multiply and form
In their prearranged time
Into specialized areas
To form
The basic anatomical structures
As they were ordained.
To watch this magnificent metamorphosis
As each cell group goes

A CRY FOR LIFE By
No matter how many times
I see a newborn baby
Come into this unequal world,
With its first lusty cry,
I stand in awe
at this most wondrous, daily,
Human miracle.

Precisely to its allotted area
Multiplying, turning and twisting
In three dimensions
At a given predetermined time.
Each area in a different course
But still together as one unit
And keeping intact their relationship
Marked by millimeters
Or fractions thereof
In their undaunted quest for continual
Development toward the human
Embryonic form.
I still stand in awe,
After forty years in medicine,
That the newborn resembles,
In some measure,
The parental likeness.
We can go to the moon,
Invent the most prodigious
Computer machines
And death-dealing nuclear bombs,
Fly at twice the speed of sound,
Even manufacture — in a certain sense —
Test tube babies,
Yet
All of these are mere child's play
When we look upon a baby
Being born with preplaced
Genetic qualities already in their allotted place,
Ready to assert their
Guiding qualities
At the proper time.
In pain — pain beyond all words —
Is the child delivered.
Listen to any woman who
Has borne children;
For long, unending hours
The ever-increasing
Descending pains
Torture the mother until —
At last — the child is born.
Is this symbolic of the time
To come?
To indicate that life will follow
In this vein.
Pain during birth — just the beginning —
And pain to follow
All thru life.
The mother, full spent in
Body wracking painful shudders,
Finally, her child has entered
This world.
The body now completely exhausted;

Quitely she counts to herself,
Where is that cry?
Tha long awaited cry,
The cry of life,
The cry for life.
Nobody in the birthing room
Is breathing.
They all look anxiously at
Each other.
Not a sound.
Now, her mind has joined
Her spent, tortured body.
She holds her breath .. .
Waiting - Waiting -Waiting!
In the next twenty seconds
Eternity has come and gone.
The mother waits.
Have all my nine months been in vain?
Is death now the master?
Or is
The doctor holds up the new born,
By one leg,
Upside down and whacks
The child
A good one on the bottom.
Finally, at last,
A cry rings out!
A cry of pain.
A most welcome cry of life —
A child is born.
I wonder — is this symbolic
Of lifd to come?
We enter this world in pain,
We leave this world in pain,
And in between
We call it life and living.
Addendum: My second daughter, Cathy, went
through this experience. During the
birth of her second child, Christina, she
explained to me what went through her
mind. It took her fifteen minutes and
her face was blanched while she was
relating her anxieties, Fortunately her
gynecologist at the Navy hospital in
San Diego was prepared for any emer-
gency. He had a pediatrician ready
with life saving mechanisms. She
counted up to 27. No matter how I tried
I could not express the full horror of
what my daughter went through.
