In 1943, Mr. and Mrs.
Leon Erlichster were hiding
among compassionate
Catholic people on the "A-

ryan" side of the Warsaw
Ghetto. One day while Mrs.
Erlichster and her son,
Lolek, were riding a
crowded street car, Lolek

fell under the trolley and
lost part of his leg.
Obviously shaken by the
accident, Mrs. Erlichster
broke out in great tears. A
nearby informer came to
her, said he knew she was
Jewish, and was going to
hand her over to the Nazis.
Mrs. Erlichster was able to
escape with the aid of Chris-
tian friends.
Her son was ferreted
away to .a hospital. When it
was found that he was cir-
cumcised and therefore in
danger, a Catholic nun from
the Catholic Order of
Sharytki, took Lolek out of
the hospital and cared for
him in a Catholic institu-
tion.
When the war was over
in 1945, the Erlichsters
came to reclaim their son.
The Catholic sister said
he was baptised as a
Catholic and his parents
could no longer see him.
Since then, the Er-
lichsters have made sev-

eral trips to Poland but
both church and civil
authorities denied them
access to their son.
Lolek is now 45 years old
and a Catholic priest. The
Erlichsters are in their late
'70s. They know they cannot
reconvert their son to
Judaism. They simply want
to see him before they die.
Last week, at their re-
quest, Seven Arts Feature
Syndicate contacted Cardi-
nal Lustiger of Paris, ask-
ing him to intervene with
the Polish bishops. He re-
sponded instantly that he
would. At the Consistory of
Cardinals in Rome in early
February, a Cardinal born
of Jewish parents will call
on Cardinal Clemp asking
him to perform the mitzva of
letting the Erlichsters em-
brace their son before they
die.
