"Double Standards" by Aviva Hellman (Pocket Books) is about a woman of the '50s, who gave of herself to nur- ture her husband and chil- dren, only to find in later years that her sacrifices were not valued. Beth Van Ess, elegant, educated, born into elite society, falls passionately in love with Adam Stillman, a poor Jewish lawyer from the Bronx. Although worlds apart, she adjusts to his life. Her friend Gillian advises her, "Continue working, setting your goals for a career of your own and enjoy your life with Adam when he's around; or you can take all of your abilities and put them to work for Adam." Beth chooses the latter, just as multitudes of women of that era did. She raises a family and aids her husband in his struggle to elevate him- self in his political career. Even when she loses faith in him, she cannot seek her own happiness elsewhere at the cost of her family and Adam's potential impor- tance. Eventually her life attains contentment, and then is shattered by Adam leaving her for a younger woman. Beth delves into a review of her life; what went wrong, what else could she have done to have had a more successful marriage and life. She comes to a realization and says, "I need a framework, a point of de- parture. I need to be part of something where I feel use- ful and productive and ap- preciated." Women of every age will empathize with that state- ment. The woman of the '80s has grown up knowing she has choices, while the woman of the '50s dis- covered it gradually as she matured and faced life out- side her home. There are still double standards governing men and women, but the gap is narrowing; there are now more avenues open to women than ever before. Aviva Hellman, in "Dou- ble Standards" focuses a beam of light on a subject that women are still struggling to bring out of the shadows. The book is worth reading because it is - thought provoking and brings about an examina- tion of the choices in one's own life. Protests Popular Anilmg Israelis RAMAT GAN (JNI) — Twenty-one percent of all Israelis have participated in some form of demonstra- tion, according to a recent study by Prof. Shmuel Lehman of Bar-Ilan Uni- versity.
