He said he would con- tinue to prod the State De- partment to disclose the fact that U.S. intelligence offi- cials did tell the department that armed PLO fighters' had remained in west Be- irut. Israeli Ref utes Yerida Report NOW THERE'S A HEALTH PLAN FOR YOUR HOME. A SMART INVESTMENT enticement to get the Jordanians to the peace table. "These excesses will make peace impossible," Levin declared, adding that he was afraid "the stick, in- stead of the carrot," is being leveled against the Israelis. The Senator also charged that the State Department has never disclosed publicly that armed PLO members remained in west Beirut after all of them were sup- posed to have been ing financial hardship as a result of years of high infla- tion.' The facts are consid- erably at odds with those statements. "Unemployment in Israel is among the lowest of the industrial nations, consid- erably lower than the rate in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Germany, Belgium and Holland among others. "In 1980 unemployment stood . at 4.8 percent; in 1981 it was 5.1 percent; in 1982 it was an estimated 4.9 percent. It hardly seems likely that people are seeking to escape un- employment in Israel by emigrating to the U.S., where the jobless rate is twice as high. "That Israel boasts the closest thing to full em- ployment in the Western world is the result of a policy set by the government and carried out by Finance Minister Yoram Aridor. That policy is based on a re- fusal to fight inflation with unemployment, as appears to be the case in the U.S. "It is true that Israel has high inflation, but its effect on the individual is minor. Indexation provides the in- dividual full compensation for inflation to protect pur- chasing power. . "Israel's 'high inflation,' therefore, is a misnomer. That is why private con- sumption among Israelis increased by 8.4 percent in 1981. Even in 1982, a year marked by the Lebanese war, consumption rose 3.5 percent. These statistics belie the charge of 'growing financial hardship' as a cause of emigration. "Emigration is always present in countries of high immigration, as American history demonstrates. In Israel, emigration has existed from long before the founding of the state, as your reporter observed. There are no indications of an increase in emigra- tion in recent years; rather, the opposite is true. Government statis- tics show a decline to less than 10,000 emigrants per year during the past two years. "It remains true, never- theless, that high motiva- tion and genuine dedication are needed to live in a coun- try that has fought five major wars in 35 years against enemies sworn to destroy it. "The fact that Israel's Jewish population has in- creased some sixfold since the nation achieved inde- pendence, and that 11 out of every 12 immigrants to Is- rael stayed on, testifies to the existence of such high motivation." Veil 'Tired of Nazi Trials' PARIS (JTA) — Simone Veil, former president of the European Parliament and a survivor of Au- schwitz, said she has "had enough" of trials of former Nazis or Nazi collaborators. In an interview with Le Monde, Veil said: "My views on this subject might shock some and might be misun- derstood by others but 40 years after the war, I have had enough of these trials." Mrs. Veil, a former magistrate, was questioned about the "Papon affair," the case of former Budget Minister Maurice Papon who was charged last week with "crimes against hu- manity" for his alleged role in.the deportation of 1,690 Jews from Bordeaux when he was an official of the Vichy regime during World War II. Mrs. Veil, who takes an active interest in Jewish af- fairs, also said she was adamantly opposed to re- troactive laws. She stressed that Papon was being charged 40 years after the alleged events, after France's Parliament lifted the statue of limitations for war crimes or crimes against humanity. Mrs. Veil, who lost her family in Auschwitz, said: "(Adolf) Eichmann was a case apart. He had become a symbol. I also think that (Josef) Mengele (the Au- schwitz doctor), were he to be found, would justify some special measures. As for the rest, I have had enough of these trials." Mrs. Veil said that people who committed war crimes or crimes against humanity and are only now being found out "should not be permitted to continue lead- ing normal, quiet, everyday lives." She explained that the public revelation of their former acts would be suffi- cient punishment, but ruled out any legal proceedings. Let the end try the man. —Shakespeare .
