be, at Sinai birthing is a
family affair.
The old post-partum
units are now "family-
centered care" units,
where the same nurses
care for the new mother
and her baby. Mothers
are encouraged to keep
their babies with them as
much as possible and,
under the nurses' super-
vision, to care for them.
The hospital has special
visiting hours for grandpar-
ents and brothers and sis-
ters. There are also classes
for these family members,
so they can learn what to
expect before the new baby
arrives.
Fathers are encouraged
to be with the mothers
throughout their labor, de-
livery and recovery — even
for those who deliver by
cesarean — and they may
visit at any time.
Sinai Hospital has been
providing obstetrical care
since it opened in 1953. It
has been estimated that
close to 100,000 babies have
been born at Sinai. In recent
years, more than 3,500
babies have been born an-
nually at Sinai.
