Immigrants
Are Settling In
JERUSALEM (JNI) —
Immigrants who arrived in
Israel between September
1978 and August 1979 are
settling in quite well, ac-
cording to a Central Bureau
of Statistics survey of
18,000 olim.
Almost 90 percent of the
respondents were living in
permanent housing and
only 14 percent were still
seeking employment, com-
pared to a jobless rate of five
percent among the general
population.
Still, four years after
their arrival, only 19 per-
cent of the group use He-
brew as their primary lan-
guage, and 75 percent of
their social gatherings are
with people from their coun-
tries of origin.
Some 11 percent of the
1978-1979 immigrants left
Israel within three years of
their arrival. But among
those from the West, yerida
reached 24 percent.
