rael gone to such extremes
in order to run for another
term.
Chief Rabbis Shlomo
Goren and Ovadia Yosef are
approaching the end of a
10-year term in office and
according to a law passed by
the Knesset they are not
allowed to run again.
There are many candi-
dates for this high office.
But as the date of the elec-
tions approaches, the two
Chief Rabbis insisted on a
chance to remain in office
for another term. Rabbi
Goren appealed to Prime
Minister Menahem begin to
use his influence to prolong
the term of office for another
five years. But there is no
majority in the Knesset for
this proposal. Minister for
Justice Moshe Nissim and
the Minister for Internal Af-
fairs Dr. Yosef Burg are op-
posed to it.
A compromise was
adopted to try and
change the law allowing
the present Chief Rabbis
to run again for office, to-
gether with other candi-
dates.
Partisans of the two Chief
Rabbis circulated a petition
among the rabbis in Israel
for allowing the two Chief
Rabbis to stay in office for
another term, but many
rabbis refused to sign.
In case of an open candi-
dacy, the Sefardi Chief
Rabbi Ovadia Yosef has a
much better chance to be
re-elected. The two Chief
Rabbis, who have quarreled
for many years, have stop-
ped their controversies and
established a united front
for their goal, in order that
the Sefardi and Ashkenazi
electors should support
their candidacy. Their goal
has been opposed by many
in the Israeli media.

ezuela, Costa Rica, San Sal-

accepted invitations and
will send their elite squads
to the games which will be
held in stadiums through-
out Israel May 1-7.
He also said that African
countries which have ac-
cepted invitations to the
games are Kenya, the Ivory
Coast and Zaire.
Ofek surprised his
audience by announcing
that Egypt likewise had
accepted an invitation,
but said he was not cer-
tain whether Egypt
would follow through
and send a team because
of the change in the polit-
ical situation in the Mid-
dle East between the time
it accepted the invitation
and now.
In addition, Ofek said he
was meeting with the
president of the Lebanese
Olympic Committee delega-
tion in Los Angeles this
week and intended to invite
him to send athletes to the
May events, which he
termed "the Peace Games."
The president of the

ing this week in Los

JERUSALEM — Israeli
Tourism Minister Avraham
Sharir caused a furor in Is-
rael last week by claiming
that part of the reason Is-
rael invaded Lebanon was
to disrupt a nonaggression
pact the Palestine Libera-
tion Organization had
sought with Israel.
Sharir's remarks at an Is-
rael Bond meeting in Paris
were quoted by the Paris
correspondents of Yediot
Ahronot and Davar. Sharir
later claimed he was mis-
quoted.

NEW YORK (JTA) — El
Al will resume service be-
tween New York and Tel
Aviv. The first flight will
depart from Kennedy Air-
port on Sunday and there
will be two flights weekly
thereafter. El Al was
grounded by labor disputes
four months ago. Its last
flight from New York was
on Sept. 13.
The airline also an-
nounced the closing of six of
its European offices within
the next few days and dis-
missal of dozens of its Israeli
workers there.
Closure of the offices in
Brussels, Copenhagen,
'Marseilles, Bucharest,
Munich and Lisbon will
save an estimated $550,000
annually. Airline sources
say a list of half of the 750
permanent El Al employes
