By PAULINE WEISS HOLISTIC APPROACH Readers who have been waiting for Judith Krantz's new book will not be disap- pointed in "Mistral's Daughter." Published by Crown, the book is a step above the av- erage in this genre. It has been well researched and moves smoothly and in- terestingly through the glamorous- and exciting worlds of art and fashion in France and New York. The story concerns three TO LEARNING DISABILITIES • Nutritional • Psychomotor • Academic - reading writing language math • Perceptual training • Relaxation techniques Linda Folios M.Ed. 280-2924 CREATIVE PHOTOGRAPHY "QUALITY BY BRUCE • PHOTOGRAPHS WITH THAT PERSONAL TOUCH PACKAGES TO MEET MOST BUDGETS" • Weddings • Anniversaries • Bar and Bat Mitzvahs • Special Occasions 30% OFF INVITATIONS 557-4257 HOURS BY APPOINTMENT generations of beautiful women, beginning with Maggie, an illegitimate child who has been raised by her grandmother in obser- vance of Jewish traditions. This heritage runs like a golden thread through her life, that of her stunning, troubled daughter and fi- nally, her lovely, talented granddaughter. Innocent Maggie Lunel first seeks her fortune in Paris in the 1920s, as an artists' model. Her meet- ing with Mistral, a painter of genius,, is de- stined to shadow all three generations of Lunel women. He uses Maggie's love as his inspiration and changes the course of her life. Disillusioned, and convinced that she cannot rely on any man, Maggie succeeds in building a successful fashion modeling agency. M4gie does not want her daughter Teddy, to suffer as she had, so she shelters her from the past and fails to pass on to her that back- ground which would give her a sense of belonging. Teddy's legacy is to indulge in a tragic, all-consuming love affair with Mistral. Fauve, Mistral's daugh- ter, is raised by Maggie. This time, she does not want to repeat her mistakes: so she reveals almost all of the past and imbues Fauve with her Jewish heritage. Bright, impulsive Fauve brings new life to Mistral and his art until she dis- covers his past. - As for Mistral, he is an anti-hero of magnitude. You will love him for his magnetism and his over, whelming passion for his art while hating him for his lack of regard for all who cross his path. The panorama of "Mis- tral's Daughter" presents the quiet life and lush fields of Provence as it sweeps into the hectic life of glamour in a modeling agency in New York. The secondary characters in the book are well drawn and are of interest in their own right. There is a passage of time during which France has surrendered to Hitler. It is terrifying to watch the Jewish people being slowly stripped of normal lives as each new indignity is put upon them. The manner in which this is woven into the plot makes a fascinating story. In the final denouement, the threads are drawn to gether to form a tapestry that will satisfy the reader.
