Israelis Differ on the Falashas

Ziegerman went into
Ethiopia on an Israeli
passport. He said the eco-
nomic situation of the
Falashas was bad. There–
were conditions of famine in
Ethiopia and the Falashas
were affected by it, Zeiger-
man said.
Moreover, he added, their
condition was worse than
that of other groups because
they "suffer from anti-
Semitism," they are not
permitted to learn Hebrew,

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The condition of the Jews in
Ethiopia (Falashas) is "very
hard," according to Knesset
member Dror Zeigerman
(Likud-Liberals) who re-
turned Saturday night from
a 10-day visit to Ethiopia
with a group from the World
Union of Jewish Students
(WUJS).

Israel-Ethiopia
Ties Are Denied

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Government officials de-
nied any knowledge Mon-
day of a report in a British
publication that Israel's re-
lations with Ethiopia have
improved of late to the point
where Israeli advisers have
replaced Soviet and East
German experts working
witb the head of the Marxist
regime, Menghistu Haile
Mariam, in Addis Ababa.
The report appeared in
"Foreign Report," a sub-
sidiary of the London
Economist. It said that Is-
rael's defense links with
Ethiopia, which were close
during the reign of the late
Emperor Haile Salassie,
had been restored.
