Canonization Report Denied

LONDON — The Vatican
has assured leaders of the
Czech Jewish community in
Israel that it is not consider-
ing canonization for Jozef
Tiso, president of Slovakia
during World War II. The
information was reported
by the International Coun-
cil of Jews from Czechos-
lovakia.
Convicted of war crimes,

Tiso was hanged in 1947. He
was held responsible for the
depoitation of 57,628 Jews,
of whom only 348 returned
from the Nazi concentration
camps.

A Catholic weekly,
"Slovak - in America," had
reported that canonization
for Tiso was being consid-
ered.

Welfare Rolls_
Stable in Israel

JERUSALEM (JNI) —
The National Insurance In-
stitute, Israel's welfare
agency, reported that wel-
fare cases dropped from
13,000 to 10,000 in Israel
last year.
Of the 3,000 cases drop-
ped, however, most are
being handled by other
agencies.

families, 30 percent are
"working poor" who receive
income supplements, 20
percent are men unable to
find work and 20 percent
have temporary illnesses or

The insurance institute
reported that the welfare
rolls had doubled between
1977 and 1981, but have
now declined to 1970 levels.
The hardest hit categories
within the poorest 12.1 per-
cent of the Israeli popula-
tion are families with four
or more children and
single-parent families.
