36 Friday, January 21, 1983 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Canonization Report Denied LONDON — The Vatican has assured leaders of the Czech Jewish community in Israel that it is not consider- ing canonization for Jozef Tiso, president of Slovakia during World War II. The information was reported by the International Coun- cil of Jews from Czechos- lovakia. Convicted of war crimes, laimmai... Tiso was hanged in 1947. He was held responsible for the depoitation of 57,628 Jews, of whom only 348 returned from the Nazi concentration camps. Of the 3,000 cases drop- ped, however, most are being handled by other agencies.
