Kodesh. He then lauded the
Jewish community of De-
troit. "So many organiza-
tions and synagogues have
opened their arms to us. We
are truly one people," he
said.
The rabbi compared the
loss of the Torahs to a death
in the family, and mourning
ribbons were distributed to
the audience. He began to
weep as he described how
West Bloomfield firemen
saved six large Torahs and
three small ones from the
synagogue's small chapel.

During a question-and-
answer session at the end of
the meeting, Fishman em-
phasized that the congrega-
tion's insurance would
cover the cost of rebuilding.
He said the synagogue's
memorial plaques were de-
stroyed, but the records are
intact and the plaques will
be replaced. He predicted
that the congregation would
have services "in our own
sanctuary" by the High
Holidays in September.
He added that both kitch- 4
ens in the synagogue were
destroyed but the library
was "basically saved." The
rabbi's office is "smoky but
intact," Fishman said.
Fishman added that a
number 'of individuals, in-
cluding non-Jews, have con-
tributed sizable donations

to rebuild 'the synagogue.
Fishman emphasized that
the funds were not neces-
sary to rebuild the syna-
gogue, but were greatly ap-
preciated. The synagogue's
Men's Club donated $1,000
to the rebuilding fund.
Congregation member
Marilyn Rice said com-
