talks Jordan holds with Is-
rael on peace agreements
The statement said that
Sharon was willing to
negotiate withPalesti-
nians in Judaea, Samaria
and the Gaza Strip who
seek coexistence with Is-
rael. But Sharon rejected
talking to any Palesti-
nian emissaries of the
PLO.
The Defense Minister
also rejected a recent Iraqi
statement which indicated
recognition of Israel's secu-
rity needs, an apparent
change in Iraq's diehard
negative attitude towards
anything Israeli.

which demonstrated that
the company's reorganiza-
tion plan and new efficiency
measures were working.
Labor members of the
committee said $250 mil-
lion is needed to cover El
Al's debts, pay severance to
employes slated for dismis-
sal and enable the airline to
organize properly to do
business.
They said the Likud gov-
ernment must make up its
mind whether it wants to fi-
nance El Al as a national
airline or sell it off to pri-
vate interests. They can't
have it both ways, the oppo-
sition warned.
Meanwhile, the massive
police presence visible at
Ben-Gurion Airport has
been reduced, with only a
few extra security men on
hand to guard planes and El
Al property.

BONN (JTA) — The West
German army (Bundes-
wehr), expecting a shortage
of manpower over the next
two years, is re-examining a
long-standing unofficial ar-
rangement whereby Jewish
men of military age have
been exempted from the
draft for historical and
political reasons.
The Jewish Telegraphic
Agency has learned of sev-
eral cases recently where
young Jews have experi-
enced difficulty obtaining
exemptions. This is because
all 18-year-olds are now
needed to fill draft quotas.
Such had not been the case
in the past. The recruitment
of Jews has become a subject
of discussion by state offi-
cials and by various Jewish
institutions.
