He entered the rabbinate at age 20, serving at several synagogues in London be- fore becoming chief rabbi of Ireland in 1949, where he remained for 10 years. He then became the first rabbi of New York's Fifth Avenue Synagogue. In 1967, he was in- stalled as chief rabbi of the United Hebrew Con- gregations of the British Comthonwealth of Na- tions with jurisdiction over some 200 congrega- tions in the United King- dom, Australia and New Zealand. His offices include president of the Jesis' Col- lege, in London; president of the Institute of Judaism and •Medicine in Jerusalem; founder and chairiaan of the Jewish Educational De- velopment Trust; governor of Hebrew University, Bar- Ilan University, Ramat Gan and Shaare Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem; and joint president of the Council of Christians and Jews and president of the Conference of European Rabbis. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth- II in 1981.
