ises at all times . . . Mer-
rick's "resident manager" so
to speak . . . caring what is
served and how.
There's nothing like a
boss on the premises to in-
sure success or failure of a
restaurant . . . If Richard
isn't there, you can bet your
boots that Robert is.

RED CEDARS, Tele-
graph and Nine Mile, has
finally changed one of its
chef's specials . . . Red
Snapper is now broiled
Canadian Lake Pickerel .. .
11 oz. New York Steak still
remains . . . as does $6.95
price.
THERE HAD TO BE A
first place to serve brewed
decaffeinated coffee in De-
troit . . . and it was Original
Pancake House around
1972 at 'its Grosse Pointe
locale.
The one on 10 Mile Rd.
between Southfield and
Evergreen was opened
April 25, 1977, seating 120
. . . Grosse Pointe opened
April 1, 1962, seating 100
. . . Both are owned and op-
erated by Tom Hamilton.
Its excellent decaffein-
ated coffee has 36 percent
whipping cream (which
could attest for its very
smooth, elegant flavor).
Many people know that
the Original Pancake
House squeezes its own
orange juice ... but not
too many have yet dis-
covered that it also
squeezes grapefruit juice
to order.
Original Pancake House
has 15 different pancakes,
six crepes, six waffles and
11 omelettes . . . Biggest
seller is the fluffy mush-
room omelette . . . mainly
because of the mushroom
sauce with sherry wine.
There's also a Cherry
Kijafa crepe . . . made with
Cherry Kijafa wine . . . plus
caffein-free herbal tea . . . A
specialty made only by
Original Pancake House is
"The Big Apple, oven baked
fresh apples and pure
Sikiyian (Chinese cinna-
mon) glaze . . . with vanilla
or cinnamon ice cream.
All his employees are ex-
pected by Frank to be
courteous and pleasant .. .
He believes in number one
food quality . . . but wants it
served with number one
service quality too.
NOW COMES another
new oriental restaurant .. .
The Mandarin House, Or-
chard Lake Rd. just south of
Maple . . . (former Friar
Tuck's and Sutherland's
site) . . . probably the only
one of its kind in this area.
It has been open only
since Dec. 9 and already re-
ceiving much note . . . The
emphasis is on authentic
oriental cooking . . . with
three factors among others
. . . Mandarin House uses no
MSG (monosodium gluta-
mate) . . . The fine taste is
brought out by a secret
method of cooking.
Its egg rolls are very crisp
and contain only beef,
shrimp and sprouts . . . The
entire egg roll, including

casing, is made at Mandarin
House . . . along with many
dishes never seen in this
region before . Every-
thing is also cooked in veg-
etable oil.
Mandarin House seats
150 ... and is owned by
three brothers ... Kylin,
Mike and Jimmy Pan ...
Their previous oriental
restaurant was also
called The Mandarin ...
in Beverly Hills, Calif.
Sizzling platters are pre-
pared at tableside . . . plus
North China Everest Steak
. . . and if you've looked all
over for paper-wrapped
spicy chicken, it's at Man-
darin House . . . In fact, take
a few moments to look over
the menu . . . prices are rea-
sonable... and many dis-
hes an all new adventure in
oriental dining.
Mandarin House has
something special other
than food . . . it's waitress
Marilyn Chu . . . with one of
the prettiest smiles and
most gracious manners to
be seen anywhere.
