tant postmaster general, de-
fended the U.S. Post Office
decision to issue a Luther
stamp in a letter to Jennie
(Mrs. George) Kent.
Mrs. Kent protested the
issuance of a stamp honor-
ing the religious leader who
is on record as having fan-
ned viciously anti-Semitic
utterances. Assistant
Postmaster Morison ex-
plained his department's
action as follows:
"The Postal Service sup-
ports the time honored prin-
ciple of separation of church
and state and does not be-

Joint Project to Codify
Jewish Population Studies

WALTHAM, Mass. — An
international Jewish popu-
lation studies project is
being undertaken by pro-
fessors at Brandeis Univer-
sity in conjunction with ex-
perts in the fields of demog-
raphy, sociology and Jewish
studies from several other
universities in the U.S. and
Israel.
Over $70,000 in direct
funding and support serv-
ices have been committed to
the project to develop
sophisticated research tools
for studying the Jewish
community. The multi-
university program, involv-
ing professors from Bran-
deis, City University of
New York, Hebrew Univer-
sity of Jerusalem, Hebrew
Union College in Los
Angeles, and nearly a dozen
other institutions, aims to
improve the qiiality of re-
search undertaken for
planning purposes by local
Jewish federations and
other social welfare agen-
cies.
Key elements of the proj-
ect include: a standardized
questionnaire to ensure
uniformity among the
scores of Jewish population
studies to be conducted in
the U.S. and major Western
cities in the next decade;
guidelines for interpreting
the research and applying it
to policy decision-making;
and information dissemina-
tion to keep researchers ab-
reast of the most recent ad-
vances in techniques of data
collection and analysis.
Steven M. Cohen, Visit-
ing Associate Professor
of Near Eastern and
Judaic Studies at Bran-
deis, will serve as project
coordinator. He said,

American Jewish Commit-
tee has joined the United
Methodist Church in vigor-
ously condemning recent
attempts to expel Israel
from the United Nations
and its agencies.
Rabbi Marc H. Tanen-
baum, national interreli-
gious affairs director of the
AJCommittee, and the Rev.
Eugene Stockwell, associ-
ate general secretary for
overseas ministries of the
National Council of
Churches, discussing the
Middle East conflicts at a
recent three-day conference
between United Methodist
and Jewish leaders, voiced
strong opposition to the ef-
forts by Arab states.

Some 4,000 Jews in India
continue to raise jute as
their ancestors have done in
that land since 600 CE.
