In this connection, Amos Perlmutter's perceptive re- view of Jacobo Timer- man's controversial book, "The Longest War," in which Timerman de- nounces Israel's action, is worth quoting: "There is plenty to criticize and much cause for anguish in the war in Leba- non. Israel's op- position deserves a more eloquent and honest state- ment than this shrill, in- accurate and misleading book." * * * Of the 1984 Democratic Presidential hopefuls, none have been more closely in- volved with Congressional action regarding the Middle East than Sen. Alan Cranston of California. First elected to the Senate in 1968, the 67-year-old Cranston moved to the Foreign Relations Commit- tee in 1981 to pursue one of his favorite areas, having been a foreign correspon- dent prior to World War II. He was assigned to the Near East Subcommittee and has been more intimately in- volved in U.S. policy towards Israel for the past two years. Supporters of Israel re- member the Californian's leading role in trying to stop last year's sale of AWACS and F-15 enhancement equipment to Saudi Arabia. Not only was Cranston active publicly in opposition to the AWACS, but he played an effective role on the Foreign Relations Committee and in the Se- nate, mobilizing his fellow Democrats. As the Democratic Se- nate Whip, Cranston has played an active part in legislation affecting the U.S.-Israel relationship with characteristic energy. Since 1969, he has consis- tently backed the supply of military and economic as- sistance "to maintain Is- rael's deterrent capability," but primarily for moral rea- sons. Last year, the Senator sponsored' a major amend- ment to the Foreign Assis- tance Authorization Bill setting a precedent that economic aid to Israel should not be less than Is- rael's annual debt repay- ment to the U.S. The amendment was adopted by the committee but later dis- carded by the full Senate in the end-of-the-year crunch. Cranston's Senate record over the past 13 years is dis- tinguished by his activity and involvement in most is- sues of concern to the American Jewish commu- nity and his attention to the views of his many Califor- nia Jewish constituents. On the negative side, some veteran Senate aides recall Cranston's early difficulties with the Jackson-Vanik Freedom of Emigration Amendment. More recently, his open let- ter to Prime Minister Begin, following the Beirut mas- sacre dismayed supporters of Israel. * * * Israel's friends in the United States mourned the untimely passing of Rep. Benjamin Rosenthal of Queens, N.Y. Ben, 59, and in the House since 1962, was always in the forefront of the battles in the Foreign Affairs Committee in gathering support for Is- rael. His wry sense of humor and popularity with his col- leagues were only two of his outstanding char- acteristics. Ben was always there when needed to provide ad- vice and had unfailing energies on behalf of the causes he believed in. In particular, his sharp ques- tioning of State Department witnesses during numerous hearings on the Middle East stand out. There was no one quite like Ben Rosenthal in the House of Representatives and he will be sorely missed. 2 5 % OFF Au INVITATIONS 10TH ANNIVERSARY DEBORAH'S INVITATIONS Created Just For You Personalized Cocktail Napkins $9 per 100 DEBBIE GOLDFINE WEISSERMAN 537-1490 Arabic Adopted as UN Language UNITED NATIONS (ZINS) — The Security Council has adopted a reso- lution passed by the Gen- eral Assembly two years ago making Arabic the sixth official language of the UN.
