ferences sponsored by ADL
in various parts of the na-
tion. Together with
educators, community and
religious leaders, these
meetings have resulted in
stepped-up vigilance at the
local level — including in-
creased security measures
at synagogues — and have
prompted greater willing-
ness of persons to report and
combat anti-Semitic ac-
tivity.
The report pointed out
that in New York state,
which had the largest
number of incidents, police
have made a special effort to
combat religiously-
motivated vandalism and
other forms of "bias crime."
On Long Island, where
Nassau and Suffolk
counties have estab-
lished special units to
fight such violations,
anti-Semitic episodes
were reduced by 16.9
percent from 183 in 1981
to 152 in 1982, a larger de-
crease than the nation-
wide rate.
In New York City, where
police have also established
a special unit, anti-Semitic
incidents, totaling 94 as
compared to 113 in 1981,
showed a 16.8 percent re-
duction.
"The 1982 audit, despite
some .encouraging signs,"
Perlmutter concluded, "still
revealed hundreds of anti-
Semitic incidents in this na-
tion. Clearly what is called
for are even stronger law
enforcement measures,
community action and edu-
cational efforts to stamp out
this blight on American
society."
