Jewish Left
Is Criticized

Editor, The Jewish News:
Nothing underlines the
danger of self-destruction
that faces the Jewish com-
munity today — a far
greater danger than any
outside threat — than the
tormented concern and
masochistic hand-wringing
over such phenomena as
Jacobo Timerman, An-
thony Lewis, the New
Jewish Agenda and their
ilk.
Mr. Timerman is the kind
of man who gives oppor-
tunism a bad name. Before
his arrest in Argentina he
not only extolled the ruling
junta in terms that would
make a Hollywood flunky
blush, he exploited his
friendship with the gen-
erals with the odious exper-
tise of an 18th Century
court Jew.
His fall from supercilious
sycophant to imprisoned
non-person had nothing to
do with his Jewishness, but
with his close relations with
the notorious Daivd Graiver
who was suspected of
financing the Tupamaros.
In fact, his being a promi-
nent Jew was what ulti-
mately saved him. Without
the unremitting and vocal
pressure from Jews
throughout the world, he
would have probably joined
the thousands of Argenti-
na's "disappeared ones."
After leaving Argen-
tina, it did not take
Timerman long to realize
that his most tenacious
and influential adulators
and supporters would
come from the Left. Des-
perately seeking an "op-
posite number" . for
Shcharansky and
Sakharov, and in control
of much of the media,
they became Timerman's
natural — and effective —
promoters. And Timer-
man, a past master at
recognizing a lucrative
slogan, took to parroting
the catechisms of the Lef-
tist gospel with religious
regularity.
To secure his new creden-
tials he called Begin and his
Cabinet fascists and ter-
rorists, thus equating the
Israeli government that
gave him haven, succor, in-
stant citizenship, and a
journalistic platform with
the regime that stuck elec-
trodes to his genitals.
To use the old Marxist
cliche, "it is no accident"
that his greatest advocate
and promoter is the sagaci-
ous New York Times col-
umnist, Anthony Lewis,
who 10 years ago put the
Holocaust in proper
perspective by calling the
bombing of Hanoi, that bas-
tion of pristine democracy
(in which 1,600 people died),
"the most terrible destruc-
tion in the history of man."
A professional champion
of the downtrodden, Mr.
Lewis supports national

liberation movements re-
gardless of race, creed, reli-
gion, or goals. Among his
favorites have been the
Khmer Rouge, slaughterers
of two million Cambodians,
and that.noble darling of the
Old and New Left, the PLO,
through whose tireless ef-
_ forts more than 100,000
Arabs, not to mention a
couple of thousand Jews,
have found their deaths.
Timerman could not have
found a more fitting fan.
Not surprising, these
shining proponents of the
higher Jewish values are
the heroes of the !`con-
cerned Jews" who have
banded together to form
the "New Jewish
Agenda," one of the sev-
eral reincarnations of
"Breira." This "new"
agenda was old hat over a
hundred years ago. It is
the typical universalist
alternative to the "nar-
row nationalism" of
Zionism.
Despite its many guises,
and disguises, and despite
its protestations of love for
Israel, it is no different from
its spiritual ancestor, the
old Jewish "Bund," the very
same "Bund" that in the
1930s was responsible for
sealing the fate of millions
of Jews by violently oppos-
ing Zionist "aliya" from
pre-Holocaust Europe.
Following in their
forefathers' footsteps, the
New Agendists now advo-
cate anti-Israeli policies
which, if successful, will
just as surely seal the fate of
the state of Israel.
What is discouraging is
that so many good Jews
have learned nothing from
recent history, and still
treat these aberrations
seriously. Today's real
Jewish agenda is much too
crowded and urgent to allow
time for the Timermans, the
Lewises and all the multi-
hued "Breira"niks of this
world.
They should be relegated
to their rightful place in the
sad long line of Jewish
Uncle Toms, and to that
all-too-spacious compart-
ment in hell reserved for
those who would destroy us
from within.

Some material on this
subject has been offered
by Z. W. Falk, Jewish
Matrimonial Law in the
Middle Ages (Oxford
University Press), Page
34:
"After the Jewish wife
had won her status as mis-
tress of the house and once
she became cognizant of the
role played by her Christian
counterpart, she was no
longer willing to share her
home with another wife."

Speed Skater
Irving Jaffee

Editor, The Jewish News:
On Page 54 of your Dec.
24 issue The Jewish News
listed the name of Irving
Jaffee as a figure skater
who was one of the athletes
in the Jewish Sports Hall of
Fame.
I wish to correct an error.
Pages 827-828 of the World
Book-shows Irving Jaffee as
the winner of the 5,000- and
10,000-meter speed skating
events in the 1932 Olym-
pics.
Jaffee was a U.S. cham-
pion and 48 years elapsed
before another American
won in these two events. He
was Epic Heiden of Min-
neapolis who won all five
events he entered in 1980.
The writer saw Jaffee
skate several times and
he was a true champion.
Some years ago, at my re-
quest, Danny Raskin wrote
about Jaffee, outlining the
fact that he was the only na-
tional and Olympic Jewish
speed skating champion.
