THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS West Point Chapel Stresses Jewish Ties to Academy WEST POINT, N.Y. — Last month's ground- breaking ceremony for the first. JeWish chapel at the United States Military Academy here brought one of this country's _best kept military secrets out into the open — yes, there are Jews at West Point. Although the current Jewish enrollment of 49 cadets at the West Point re- presents only one percent of the academy's 4,400 stu- dents, Jews have always played an important role at the school. The academy's first graduating class in 1802 was made up of two cadets; one of them being Jewish. Simon Levy, Who had been accepted on the strength of his "good con- duct" as a sergeant at the Battle of Maumee Rapids, which ended the 1794 In- dian War in Ohio, was commissioned a second lieutenant. The pattern of Jewish enrollment at the academy has not changed much over the years, with a total rang- ing from the low 30s to the 50s and an average of 10 Jewish graduates a year. More than 200 Jewish West Pointers served in World War II and there are now about 300 Jewish alumni of the academy. Among the Jewish graduates currently serv- ing the U.S. armed forces are several prominent generals. Lieut. Gen. Bennett L. Lewis (class of 1950) is a Deputy Assis- tant Secretary of Defense and Lieut. Gen. Lincoln D. Faurer (class of 1950) ; now of the Air Force, is director of the National Security Agency. Brig. Gen. Eugene Fox is de- puty director of testing at the office of the Secretary of Defense. The $5..5 million chapel, MAUDE'S GOURMET MEATS ....---- 28811 Northwestern Hwy' . Inquiry Panel Ends Hearings Cohens Plant Grove in Israel )tir JERSALEM (JTA)— The commission of inquiry into the west Beirut refugee camps-massacre of last Sept.. 16 18 ended its formal hear- ings after it became un- necessary ,for Defense Minister Ariel Sharon to appear before the body a second time. He had been summoned by chief of army intelligence Gen. Yehoshua Saguy for cross examination on cer- tain points of his original testimony. But attorneys for the two men agreed at the last minute that Sharon would make written replies to key questions. The hearings, in progress since last Oct. 20, would have concluded their second round with Sharon's scheduled re-appearance. The panel is now expected to finish work and submit its recommendations within the next few weeks. Sharon and Saguy were among nine senior Israeli political and mili- tary figures warned by the commission in No- vember that they might be harmed if the panel reached .certain conclu- sions on the basis of their original testimony. The law provides that persons so notified may re- appear to give additional testimony, examine evi- dence and question wit- nesses. But this is not man- datory. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Cohen and Family.
