firmation nor denial of
these reports.
Shamir told the Knesset
committee that some of the
reports were "inaccurate,"
but did not go into detail.
On another matter,
Shamir said, in reply to a
question by Labor Party
chairman Shimon Peres,
that Israel was disturbed
and concerned about reports
that Syria was being armed
with the latest sophisti-
cated weaponry from the
Soviet Union.
Peres asked Shamir
whether the arms now
being sold to Syria had ever
been sold to any other coun-
try, indicating that the
USSR was giving Syria a
first crack at using the
highly sophisticated arms,
Liz Taylor Meets Begin
JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Actress Elizabeth -Taylor,
dogged by accident and ill-
health during her visit to Is-
rael, met briefly with Prime
Minister Menahem Begin
at his office in Jerusalem:
- The session was part of
Ms; Taylor's one-woman
peace effort: she planned to
fly to Beirut this week to see
President Amin Gemayel
and Israeli officials say she
was scheduled to be in
Kiryat Shmona Thursday
when the Israeli and
Lebanese negotiators re-
sume their sessions there.
Ms. Taylor is still suffer-
ing the after-effects of a
road accident Saturday in
which she injured both ank-
les and sustained other
knocks- and bruises. She
plainly found it difficult to
walk and one hand was
bandaged.
The car taking her to
visit Defense Minister
Ariel Sharon crashed
into the car ahead of it,
belonging to Sharon's
spokesman Uri Dan, on a
wet Negev road. .
She also has a sore throat,
a condition she has been
unable to shake off
throughout -her week-long
stay in Israel. Begin told her .
how pleased he was to have
her here — and how sorry to
hear of her accident. After
15 minutes of conversation,
Ms. Taylor departed, bear-
ing a large bouquet of flow-
ers from the premier's • staff.
Israeli Soldier
Killed in Ambush
TEL AVIV (JTA) — An
Israeli army officer died
Sunday night of wounds he
suffered Sunday in Leba-
non. The name and rank of
the soldier was not im-
mediately released.
A spokesman said he was
one of two soldiers wounded
when their vehicle was am-
bushed by small arms fire
near Kfir Sil, a village south
of Beirut.
Weather-related prob-
lems are also troubling Is-
raeli forces in Lebanon. The
army has put a specially-
trained and equipped "Al-
pine regiment" into action
to help soldiers overcome
difficulties caused by the
bitter cold and snow in the
mountainous Shouf area to
which Israelis are not ac-
customed.
The unit is said to be com-
bat ready, but its principal
task appears to be to dig out
soldiers bogged down by
heavy snow-falls.
