wheelchair in front of the
bandstand, 'Frisco' brought
back tears of nostalgia as he
began to sing.
"Although dealt a severe
blow by being relegated to
life in a wheel chair, Ben
could still smile from a
brave pillar of strength that
lies within a soul which has
never said quits . . . This
courageous man who was
once known as 'Rubber Legs
Frisco' would have also
danced as in the old days
with Sammy . . . except that
he no longer has any legs."
July 5, 1968 . . . "Chil-
dren's Dept. . . . Postcard re-
ceived by Maria and Julius
B. Rubin from eight-year-
old son Melvin, spending his
first summer at camp ... .
`Dear Mom and Dad. I am
not having a better time
than I thought I would.' "
July 5, 1968 . . . "Eli
Springer had a fare huddled
in a corner of his cab's back
seat, comfortably wrapped
in a stupor . . . After a ses-
sion of just cruising about
on orders given by the wob-
bly gent, Eli asked, 'Where
now?' . . . 'Just go around
the block,' mumbled the in-
ebriated gent.
"When Eli wearily stated
that it was all he'd been
doing for the past hour, the
drunk drooled about that
being the probable reason
for his dizziness . . . and told
Eli to turn around and go
the other way."
- July 28, 1968 . . .
"Seven-year-old Buddy
Richter is especially fond of
chocolate cake . . . and had
already gulped two sizeable
helpings with his tall glass
of milk . . . 'If you eat any
more cake you'll burst,'
cautioned mother, Anne
Richter . . . 'Well, pass the
cake, Mom, and watch out
for yourself,' replied little
Buddy."
June 28, 1968 . . . "Dog
show was being held here in
Detroit and woman- was
standing in lobby of a local
hotel with an English
bulldog . . . at whom the lit-
tle girl kept making faces
. . . The child's mother
asked her why she was mak-
ing faces at the bulldog, and
the little tot, starting to cry,
answered, 'He started it!' "
