Two of Them Along the Shore

By DR. MAURICE CROLL

Along the smooth, white sand
Of this lonely, winding beach
They walked along so
Leisurely, barefoot,
Like two lovers — oblivious
To the sun, the gentle winds,
The racing white clouds
To all of nature's quirks
That reached out to
Warm the shore.

The waves, each one
Rising Higher than
The one before,
Peeking out at these two,
Came gently into shore —
Vying to smooth out
The drifting sand
In comfort for these two.

The waves all knowing
Winked at one another
In their sly, constant motion
As they walked along the shore
Holding hands,
As new lovers were
Ever wont to do,
Immersed into each other.

The new born sun
Came down to have a look.
So strange it seemed —
Two lovers at seventy
Holding hands so gleefully.
The sun broke out in such
A widened smile
And then, so happily,
Smiled again.

The soft pencils of brilliant
Penetrating rays
Shone thru the curled endings
Of her wind-blown auburn hair
Lighting up her face
That shone so full in
Abject, overwhelming love
As she guided her
Deep brown glittering eyes
Directly unto her lover,
-As if to say, in words,
So loud,
I am yours — then and now.
Even more so now.

The birds flew down
To look upon these two
And, having filled their eyes
In such a beauteous scene,
Then swooped away
As gliding swans, so gracefully,
To reach their kind
So far away
To tell them to sing out
To all the world,
Love at 70 — it is real
And lasting — for a lifetime,
Still a wondrous thing to see.

The gray at his temples
Came sloping down, fuzzy,
Bespoke of time with love
That grew upon these two.
He stopped, looked full
Into her loving, receptive eyes
That darted back and forth —
Growing more intense
With each loving look —
Multiplying in force
That spoke out so very plain.

Their sacred bonds of marriage
Promised so eagerly in full
So many years ago. It seemed to
Now grow stronger
With the oncoming years
As they walked together
In complete, fully attained
Harmony
Toward their God - with love.

The earth, the wind, the sun,
The clouds in unison
Looked on, as if pre-arranged
And then, in awe, stood still.

The two walked on, oblivious,
Still holding hands.

Addendum: Today, in this free, unresolved
- world of male and female, it is a beauti-
ful sight — to see two youngsters (70)
walking together, 'holding hands. The
vows of marriage not only lasting, but
actually reinforced. It could do away
with almost any type of heart trouble.

Jewish Information Bureau at 50
Recalls the Richards' Labors

Steven Wise, who has
undertaken continuation of
the services provided by the
Jewish Information
Bureau, announced this
week that elaborate ar-
rangements are being made
to mark the 50th anniver-
sary of this non-profit
agency.
The anniversary recalls
the organizational skills of
the late Bernard G.
Richards, who formed the
bureau and continued pro-
viding services to the hun-
dreds requiring them, al-
ways without charge.
Upon the death of Ber-
nard G. Richards, whose na-
tional popularity caused
him to.be identified as BGR,
in 1971, at the age of 94, the
bureau was directed, again
on a volunteer basis, by his
son, the late Judah
Richards, who, like his
father, was an active par-
ticipant in Jewish move-
ments, specifically the
Zionist.

Now Steven Wise
sues these tasks, pursu-
ing the traditional volun-
teer assistance given to
the many inquirers.

The bureau continues its
headquarters at 250 W.

mation Bureau, Wise lists
typical questions addressed
to the agency with inquiries
about sources.

JUDAH RICHARDS and
BERNARD RICHARDS

57th St., New York 10019.
The late Bernard
Richards was an organizer
of the American Jewish
Congress. He worked
closely with Supreme Court
Justice Louis D. Brandeis
and the world and national
Zionist leaders. He was a
popular contributor to
major Jewish periodicals.
His writings appeared
frequently in The Detroit
Jewish News. He was the
author of "The Discourses of
Keidansky" (1903) and
"More Discourses of
Keidansky" (1928).
Commenting on the con-
tinuity of the Jewish Infor-

"The questions are
many and varied. A stu-
dent in Tyler, Tex.
needs to know where she
can obtain some early
references on Louis
Brandeis's role in the
Zionist movement. A
woman in Melbourne,
Australia, asks how she
can trace a relative who
moved to Chicago.

"A bride-to-be wants to
find a calligrapher to in-
scribe a ketuba. A minister
in Malta requests a bibliog-
raphy of the Dreyful Af-
fair. A teacher in Brooklyn
seeks information regard-
ing the anti-Jewish riots
that took place in Poland
after World War I and the
subsequent investigations
(1919) by two separate
commissions.
"A free-lance writer in St.
Louis inquires about
sources concerning the ear-
liest Jewish settlement in
Romania. A Conservative
rabbi in Teaneck, N.J., is in-
terested in obtaining mate-
rial for a projected program
about the Falashas."
