Jacobs, president of the National Council of Young Israel, has been appointed co-ordinator for North and Latin America by the World Con- ference of Synagogues. The appointment was made at the recently concluded World Zionist Congress in Jerusalem, at .which the Young Israel leader was a delegate from the World Conference of Synagogues. Jacobs will oversee the synagogue affairs and de- velopments in the many small Jewish communities in Latin America. The period between Tu b'Shevat and Passover tra- ditionally is designated as the season for Jewish music. Both holidays, on either end of the eight-week period, focus on the land of Israel. Tu b'Shevat in its special observances, draws atten- tion to the produce of the land; Passover, to the fact that Israel is the final desti nation of the Israelites' sojourn following their exodus from Egypt. Both holidays have found expression in Jewish song — Tu b'Shevat, with its folk-songs that reflect the pioneer spirit of modern Is- rael; Passover, with songs of freedom, the lovely Seder melodies in the Haggada, and the many beautiful set- tings of Shir Ha-Shirim, The Song of Songs, the pas- toral love poems that bind ancient and modern Israel as one. It is a season that causes us to reflect on Is- rael not only in the na- tional sense, but also in the cultural sense. We take note of the fact that Israel has, despite its relatively short history, made astounding progress in its cultural development. It is truly incredible, that a nation notwithstanding its poor economy and con-: tinuously threatened secu- rity, has been _able to de- New Firm Will Make Vaccines velop institutions such as the Rubin Academy- of Music, the Diaspora Museum, Yemin Moshe Ar- tist Colony, Bezalel Insti- tute of Art and the Israel Music Resource Center of Hebrew University, not to mention such internation- ally known and viable per- forming organizations such as the Israel Philharmonic, the Israel Chamber Or- chestra, Jerusalem Sym- phony, the Inbal Dancers and the Rinat Choir, Members of the Detroit community have the oppor- tunity to see all of the above and more, in a special tour March 1-15, 1983, that will be lead by Cantor and Mrs. Chaim Najman in coopera- tion with the Cultural Commission of Cong. Shaarey Zedek. The tour will provide an opportunity to meet outstanding per- sonalities in the arts and to attend major cultural events of the theater, bal- let and symphony. He who rises late may trot all day, and not overtake his business at night. —Franklin In addition to the usual sightseeing tours that are standard for tourists during the day, there will be con- certs and performances in the evenings for which tic- kets have been included in the total package. Israel, more than ever, needs our moral and finan- cial support, including tourism. Who's Got ATARI Software? JDL Threatens Nazi Meeting HAIFA — A new high technology company has re- cently been founded by the Technion Research and De- velopment Foundation Ltd. and a team of Technion sci- entists. The company, Haifa Genetics Ltd., will make use of advanced genetic methods and technology in the development of vaccines against animal and human viral diseases. This involves the application of knowl- edge in the area of recom- binant DNA gained through the years by the company's scientists. The Haifa scientists em- phasize that the use of gene- tic technology to produce vaccines is preferable to the present techniques because it prevents the possibility of activating germs and caus- ing the disease itself, and because of the ability to produce such vaccines cheaply.
