boort 11: 1983 , 11 TIE DETROITIJEW1SN; NEWS Looking at the Jewish World By WARREN FREEDMAN The American Jewish community can hardly take pride in the fact that less than 1 percent of American Jews have made aliya to Is- rael . . . perhaps 50,000 be- tween 1948 and 1980. Interestingly, the first American ,Consul in the Holy Land, Ward Cresson, converted to Judaism in 1845, made aliya, and then established an agricultural colony near Jerusalem. * * * Today Israel is America's Deluxe Kosher PASSOVER Tours WORLDWIDE 8, 9 or 10 Day Stays March 27—April 6, 1983 3 Reshly Prepared Glatt Kosher Meals Daily 2 Traditional Conducted Seder Services Top Name Entertainment EL PRESIDENTE AMERICANA NOOMAIM INNISBROOK RESORT Tarpon Springs SHERATON BAL HARBOUR Bal Harbour EDEN ROC Miami Beach EIMERICEMS COMM Palm Springs GENE AUTRY RESORT Palm Springs KUILIMEI HYATT Oahu TO , CO PALMAS DEL MAR LAKE GENEVA RESORT Lake Geneva, Wisconsin AMERICANA GREAT GORGE Vernon Valley, N.). Israeli - American trade hit $3.8 billion in 1981. Fur- thermore, American busi- ness has invested in Israel more than $1 billion. He has referred to Jews by the vague phrase, "Seed of Abraham," so as not to create disfavor with the de- scendants of Ishmael. He has called for the recogni- tion of the "legitimate rights" of the Palestinians and wants Jerusalem to be an international city. On the other hand, Pope John Paul II has been a great humanitarian, sensi- tive to the needs of the op- pressed. But on Oct. 2, 1979, at the United Nations, he recalled the agony of Au- schwitz without a reference to its Jewish victims. * * * - Irving , Professors Abella and Harold Troper of Canada, in their new book "None Is Too Many," have de- scribed th'e callousness of Canadian government officials in excluding Jewish refugees before and during World War II. The authors, relying on unpublished documents and archives, revealed private efforts by Canadian leaders to block immigration of Jewish refugees - 7n a "menace" to Canada's ethnic, social and moral in- tegrity. In particular, F.C. Blair of the Immigration Dept.; Ernest Lapointe, an associate of the Prime Minister Mackenzie King; and Vincent Massey, the Canadian High Commis- sioner in London between 1935 and 1946, were ac- cused. During that period of time only 5,000 Jews made it to Canada . . . compared to 14,000 from Bolivia and 14,000 from Chile. * * * Did you realize that you can telephone Israel di- rectly? First dial 011 or 01, then Israel's code of 972, then the city code (Haifa 4, Jerusalem 2, Ramat Gan 3, Tel Aviv 3, etc.), and finally the local telephone number.
