Wiesenthal Nixes Canada Visit
for Inaction on War Criminals

TORONTO (JTA) —
Nazi-hunter Simon Wie-
senthal has refused to set
foot in Canada for the past
decade because of what he
believes is the reluctance of
the Canadian government
to prosecute Nazi war crim-
inals living in Canada.

Wiesenthal, head of the
War Crimes Documenta-
tion Center in Vienna, has
been invited to speak by the
Canadian Jewish Congress
and other Jewish institu-
tions since his brief visit to
Vancouver in 1972. But he
will not enter the country
and has explained his rea-
sons in an interview with
the Canadian Broadcasting
Corp. and in communica-
tions with Jewish leaders in
Canada.
Wiesenthal contends that
despite information about
known Nazi war criminals
living in Canada, the gov-
ernment in Ottawa has re-
fused to act. He decried the

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Energy Minister Yitzhak
Modai has decided in prin-
ciple that Israel will build a
nuclear power plant. He
said he would present his
proposal to the Cabinet
shortly, after completion of
a feasibility study by a
committee of experts.
The committee, headed
by Amos Horev of the Ilaifa
Technion, has already con-
cluded that nuclear power
will be cheaper than' that
produced by' coal-fired
plants. But it will not be
feasible for Israel to build a
nuclear plant until the
mid-T990s.
The committee is recom-
mending that in the
interim, Israel purchase a
nuclear power plant over-
seas. Modai reportedly has
begun preliminaary negoti-
ations for such a purchase.

Sephardi - Ashkenazi Battle
Is Spreading to Jerusalem

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The wave of anti-police and
anti-Ashkenazi slogans
painted on buildings and
cars reached Jerusalem
Tuesday.
Police connected the inci-
dents to the killing of Shi-
mon Yehoshua at Kfar
Shalem in Tel Aviv last
week, when officers fired at
him as he tried .to prevent
the municipal demolition of
his home:
Swastikas and slogans
were painted on walls and
cars in several neighbor-
hoods in Jerusalem early
Tuesday. The tires of three
cars in Rehavia neighbor-
hood in Jerusalem were
punctured. Swastikas and
anti-police slogans were
painted on the home of
Interior Minister Dr. Yosef
Burg. Similar drawings and
slogans were painted on the
Jerusalem Theater and a
Bank Leumi branch office
in Rehavia. One of the slo-
gans read:"Ashkenazis to
Auschwitz and Treblinka."
Yitzhak
•President
Navon strongly con-
demned the rash of van-
dalism following , the
shooting. "The deep sor-
row occasioned by the
Kfar Shalem tragedy is
shared by all of us," he
said. "The full facts of
this incident -must cer-

and what he called "empty
promises" by a representa-
tive of Canada's Solicitor
General that the Nazis
would be prosecuted.
Last month, Canadian
officials did move against
Albert Rauca, an alleged
Nazi executioner who
murdered Jews in
Lithuania and presently
lives in Toronto. After a
hearing, a Canadian
judge ordered Rauca ex-
tradited to West Ger-
many where, presumably
he will stand trial. But
Wiesenthal was not im-
pressed by that action.
He has pointed out that
what was involved was an
extradition hearing, not a
trial, and that the impetus
came from Bonn, not from
Canada. Rauca's attorney
meanwhile is appealing the
extradition order.

Nazis Moving

ARLINGTON, Va. — The
American Nazi Party an-
nounced last week that it is
changing its name to "New
Order" and will move its
headquarters within 18
months to the Midwest,
where it expects "support
for our organization will be
a little stronger."

The highest price we can
pay for anything, is to ask it.

Last weekend Christian
religious institutions in
Jerusalem were also
smeared with swastikas
and slogans.

Quintuplet Boys
Born in Israel

TEL AVIV (JTA) —
Malka Glazel, a 31-year-old
school teacher, gave birth to
quintuplets last weekend.
Doctors at Assaf Harofeh
Hospital said the mother
and infants, all boys, are
doing well.
Mrs. Glazel, whose hus-
band Yaacov is a construc-
tion foreman, underwent
hormonal treatment during
her pregnancy. She said she
had known since the second
month that she would have
a multiple birth but did not
expect quintuplets.
