"We always had a few thousand, $3- to $8,000 to give to the poor," Lerner said. For 1983, he added, $85,000 was earmarked for financial assistance and an- other $25,000 budgeted to help the poor and needy. Lerner decried what he called the myth that the poor and hungry are concentrated primarily among the elderly. He agreed that the elderly were among the needy Jews served, but added that newly-arrived Rus- sian Jews, unemployed Jews from what would traditionally be labeled the middle class and single parent families also receive help from the JFS. He said the percentage of families receiving assis- tance, where the head of the household is under 60 years old, is rising.
