His diversification is pre-
tty much as George's excel-
lent column . . . fluidly writ-
ten so interestingly about
everything.
Last Tuesday, his televi-
sion bit was regarding the
closing of Tweeney's .. .
talking with three restau-
rant owners (Irving's,
where the sequence was
also taped, a coney island
and a pizza place) who told
about their own products,
inferring that Yvonne Gill
wouldn't have gone out if
she had served their food.
Versatile George has
been a sports writer, travel
writer . . . and presently a
feature columnist . . . He
can pen just about any sub-
ject imaginable . . . except
perhaps, cryptography .. .
and we're not sure he can't
do thaf too.
CONGRATS . . . to
Sarah Horenstein . . . on her
98th 'birthday .. cele-
brated with a party in Sac-
ramento, where she resides
. . . Sarah still lives alone
and takes care of herself.
TWO PEOPLE who've
made their lives a devotion
toward helping others are
retired furrier Harold and
wife Ede Black . . . Their
thankful efforts are numer-
ous . . . and much ap-
preciated.
Harold and Ede assist the
residents of Borman Hall,
Jewish Home for the Aged,
Franklin Club and Prentis
Manor . . . They take the
sightless for walks, shop-
ping and keep the elderly
folks company.
He leads religious serv-
ices and sings in the choir at
High Holidays . . . While
Rabbi Noah Gamze at
Downtown Synagogue was
on vacation, Harold took
charge and did the services
. . . He's done the same at
Cong. Beth Shalom . . . and
has repeatedly been hon-
ored at ongei Shabat by the
residents of Franklin Club
Apartments for his services.
Harold says his greatest
accomplishment was per-
forming and leading serv-
ices at three synagogues in
one day . . . Shaharit,
Minha and'Maariv . . . plus
being master of ceremonies
at a Siyum Hatorah.
JEAN HOLLANDER is
president of Southfield Art
Council's Festival 2001 set
for May 20-22 . . . at South-
field Civic Center on Ever-
green.

Hospitals Merge
in Brooklyn

NEW YORK - The

Jewish Hospital and Medi-
cal Center of Brooklyn has
merged with St. John's
Episcopal Hospital in an ef-
fort to continue to provide
health care to impoverished
neighborhoods in the Bed-
ford - Stuyvesant and
Crown Heights sections of
the borough.
The new hospital has
been named the Interfaith
Medical Center and its 650
beds will make it one of
Brooklyn's largest teaching
hospitals. The merger is the
first in New York involving
organized Jewish philan-
thropy and the Protestant
- Episcopal Church.
