In an update to the Jewish Welfare Federation, which funds the three Hillel operations, Hillel directors at the University of Michi- gan, Michigan State Uni- versity and Wayne State University report that since the Lebanon crisis, most anti-Israel work by Arab students and their suppor- ters has subsided. While activity has esca- lated at one of the campuses (WSU), it has stabilized at Ann Arbor and died down, after some initial problems, at MSU. Even at WSU, which has had the biggest prob- lem with anti-Israel ac- tions, the Arab students on campus have no united front, and so over- all support for their ac- tivities is small. ANNA COTTLER (Mrs. Norman) HAPPY 70TH BIRTHDAY LEVI SHAPIRO WITH LOVE JUDY, SCOTT, JOEL, LAURIE, SIMCHA, CAROL, BONNIE, AARON, PHYLLIS, MATTHEW, ESTHER AND ROSE factions have engaged in a propaganda "war" with the Jewish students. Materials have included photographs, flyers and, most recently, anti-Israel bumper stickers placed on walls and kiosks around campus. "They put up their bumper stickers," said Hillel Director Rabbi Eli Finkelman, "and we put up ours." Marc Prussian, vice president of the Students for Israel group at WSU, noted that since the Arab student groups are splintered "they're joining with the Young Workers Liberation League (youth group of the Communist Party of the U.S.) in order to have a more cohesive front." Rabbi Finkelman added that the groups are so widely scattered in ideals that it's difficult to keep track of who's on which side. At U-M, some Lebanese Christians have aligned with the Jewish students in pro-Israel activities, while the anti-Israel forces "have imported Arabs from the Detroit area to make their rallies appear larger," said Hillel Director Michael Brooks. Immediately following the Phalangist massacre of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, several protest demonstrations against Is- rael, including a vigil in Oc- tober, took place on the MSU campus. No other major events have occurred since. Alan Iser, MSU Hillel director, feels that demon- strations can be counter- productive, especially if vio- lence breaks out. . "Personally," Iser said, "I'm surprised by the lack of incidents since October." To demonstrate unity, Hillel students are joining with other groups like the Union of Students for Israel (USI) at U-M and Students for Israel at WSU. Recent efforts at WSU included an attempt to bring the Jewish and Arab students together to discuss Middle East peace. The three Arab students who showed up backed out of the meeting before it began. Israel's friends at MSU far outnumber the Arab groups, and U-M's Union of Students for Israel main- tains a regular information table on campus. Monitoring campus ac- tivities is one way for the Jewish students to keep on top of the situation. USI members have been watch- ing for and responding to anti-Israel media coverage. In addition, they have been attending regularly presentations speaker sponsored by the Arab stu- dents. "Sometimes," Brooks said, "they're the only ones who show up."
