The Crematoria and the Mikva
By JUDITH BLUSTEIN
(Editor's note: Mrs.
Blustein's husband, Al-
lan, is chaplain at Sinai
Hospital of Detroit and a
former U.S. Army chap-
lain.)
Twenty years of army life
exposes one to all kinds of
fateful experiences. We
have seen "Anatevka" (Fid-
dler on the Roof) performed
in the very same city in
which the beast of beasts
harangued his Nazi hordes
into war against the Jews.
We have visited Dachau,
Mauthausen, Flossenburg,
Struthof and other exam-
ples of man's inhumanity to
man. We have taken bus-
loads of Jewish military
families to such places
Karlsruhe, Pforzheim, Bad
Wimpfen, Heilbronn, etc. in
efforts to rediscover the
Jewish roots in Germany
over the ages.
But the most singular and
somewhat chilling experi-
ence of all our time in
Europe took place in
Stuttgart, Germany.
The "Landesrabbiner"
(regional rabbi) of
greater Stuttgart was
Rabbi Fritz Bloch. Prior
to World War II, he was
rabbi of Aschaffenberg
where he was narrowly
able to cheat death at the
hands of the Nails. While
serving as spiritual
leader in Stuttgart for
over 30 years, the people
of the gemeinde (Jewish
community) learned to

On this particular day,
the female assistant was
delayed elsewhere. Con-
sequently a "bottleneck"

ensued. Dr. Bloch spotted
me waiting outside his
office and asked if I
