WHITE HOUSE MANOR Restaurant and Lounge 7. FACILITIES DAILY Casual Dining in an Elegant Atmosphere at Moderate Prices young Jews, have come to observe Hanuka. There was a time not too long ago when second gen- eration American Jews -- the sons and daughters of immigrant parents — were desperate to assimilate as 100 percent Americans. Many felt that the religion and customs of their immig- rant parents were foreign and therefore a barrier to their Americanization. In their drive to become assimilated, many Jews of that transition generation adopted the attractive sym- bols of Christmas as a sign o f 4,their becoming fully American._ The Christmas trees they placed in 422.‘:",ir homes, the presents they gave their children had lit- tle to do with the Christian observance. It was far more an act of identifying with the national civil religion of America. Today, there has been a widespread return on the part of thousands of young Jews to the roots of their ancient Jewish faith. While respecting the faith of Christians who observe Christmas as an authentic holiday, Jews increasingly ob- serve Hanuka as a genuine Jewish festival in its own terms. The story of the Mac- cabees has become not only a narrative of national lib- eration, but an experience of personal liberation of modern Jews who have come to appreciate their own rich heritage and cul- ture.
