In fact, the neighboring Dutch - ruled island of Curacao has reportedly un- broken history of Jewish population. However, Aru- ba's Jewish history isn't quite as colorful nor as con- tinuous. True, there are tombstones dating from the 16th Century, but there were few Jews in Aruba until 1922 when the first East European Jew landed here. The first Jews to repopu- late the island community had begun coming from Eastern Europe in the 1920s, but by the 1930s, with problems heating up for the Jews, many more had moved to the Carib- bean. By the end of 1930, the Aruba Jewish commu- nity numbered 38 families. A Jewish center was fi- nally established and in 1935, the first Torah was 'purchased. Minyans were still required to meet in each other's homes. It wasn't until 1962 that the Dutch government gave the Jews permission to build their own synagogue. By then, many of the origi- nal families had left the is- land. Beth Israel, located just off the main road on the south end of town, was finished in 1968. While the building, itself, is in good condition, William Rudy, the cantor who is the cur- rent leader of Aruba's Jewish community, says that they are now trying to fund a new roof. Rudy, who lives next to the synagogue, in a house that was especially built for the shul's leader, says that the services are traditional with mixed seating. Serv- ices are held on Friday nights since Saturday is the most common day for ships to disgorge their tourists for shopping and a majority of the members are involved in the clothing or jewelry business. Few people on the is- land keep kosher, mainly because everything must be flown in from Miami. Rev. Rudy says that many of the larger hotels will arrange to get kosher dinners. However, with the abundance of fish, few people seem to re- quire it. During Passover, a mas- sive order is made and the special items are then im- ported. One Passover, the synagogue went public. In the Grand Ballroom of the Concorde, 800 people lis- tened to the seder. More than a few had to be turned away. • e 5 Celebration VINEYARD'S 982 35 Strong Ties for Jews of Aruba (Copyright 1982, JTA, Inc.)
