The blessing of the priests (Birkhat Kohanim) is per- formed only in the morning service. - This has been explained on the basis of understand- ing that the morning serv- ice takes place before people (especially the priests) have eaten anything. When we arrive at the period of the afternoon service people have already consumed solid food as well as liquids. The fear that one or some of the priests might have consumed some intoxicat- ing beverage led to the exc- lusion of the priestly bene- diction in the afternoon service, since one who is in- toxicated cannot recite the benediction. Generally speaking, the benediction requires the full presence of mind from ;== the one who recites it. One is most clear in mind in the morning before one eats or drinks. There are people who believe that constant at- tacks on Israel in full- page ads in the New York Times and other news- papers induced PLO chief Yasir Arafat to postpone and to post- pone again the departure of his terrorist organiza- tion from Beirut, thus contributing to addi- tional Israeli casualties. A house divided cannot gain anything; it only loses political clout. It hurt to see the names of Jews appear alongside the names of anti-Israelis. It hurt to read articles and pronouncements of people indulging in attacks on Is- rael and Israeli leaders. In future history books, these past months will not be recorded as a credit to American Jewry. Nor will American politicians soon forget the spectacle of Jews attacking each other and of Jews attacking Israel. One says a reluctant goodbye to Israel as the plane takes off from the air- port.
