Editor, The Jewish News:
"A meatless Shabat!" was
just one of the strategies
suggested by participants at
the kashrut update session
at the recent convention of
the Union of Orthodox
Jewish Congregations of
America (UOJCA) in order
to combat the rising price of
kosher meat.
One female delegate
suggested that it may be
SUCCESS
Achievement, in a word, illustrates it best.
Carl Sterr illustrates that achievement in
classic suits and sportcoats by Southwick,
Polo sportswear by Ralph Lauren, and an
exciting collection of classic suits, skirts and
slacks for women by Lady Southwick. Now
you can look as successful as you are and
then some, in suits, sportswear, and acces-
sories from Carl Sterr, a tradition of clothing
excellence for over twenty-five years.

necessary to petition the
Rabbinical Council of
America, the rabbinic arm
of the UOJCA, to declare a
meatless Shabat once a
month. This would be in
keeping with the example of
a 19th Century rabbinic
authority who decreed a
"fishless Shabat" in order to
stem the escalating price of
fish.
Alarmed by the con-
tinuously rising price of
beef and poultry, consumers
may have no other choice
than to band together in
this way in order to stabilize
these prices.
Another topic of con-
cern to the delegates was
the proliferation of the
initial K on numerous
food products without
any guide to conscien-
tious consumers to dis-
cern tke reliability of the
individual rabbi whose
certification is the basis
for the letter K on the
product.
Rabbi Menahem Genack,
rabbinic coordinator of the
Joint Kashrut Commission,
stated that there are pre-
sently 52 different
authorities who certify
products with the letter K
on the product label. If a
consumer would like to
know the name of any K
sponsoring rabbi the infor-
mation may be requested
from the New York State
Kashrut Commission in the
World Trade Center towers
in Manhattan.
High-priced Passover
foods was another issue that
sparked debate among the
delegates. A representative
of Season Foods declared
that it is their policy not to
raise their prices for the
Passover holiday. It was
suggested that there be a
concerted effort by the OU
in this area.
Nathan K. Gross, chair-
man of the Joint Kashrut
Commission, stated that
this was an area where in-
dividual rabbis could have a
widespread effect. Just as
there was a limitation on
the price people could pay
for lulavim and etrogim for
Sukkot in Baltimore, so too,
could rabbis place limita-
tions on the prices their
congregants should pay for
Passover products in their
own communities.
