i tTNE DETROIT AWISfl NEWS • Jewish Communities Around the World By WARREN FREEDMAN ZIMBABWE {formerly Southern Rhodesia) is a strange community where Jews first settled in 1890. Zimbabwe's Prime Minister Robert Mugabe intently fights against discrimina- tion or persecution on the basis of race or religion, and yet promotes the interests of the PLO! Perhaps as many as 1,700 Jews (in 1968 there were about 8,000 Jews) still re- side here, principally in the capital city of Harare (for- merly Salisbury) and in the city of Bulwayo. The city of Harare has three congrega- tions, and Pulwayo has but one, but each city has its own full-time rabbi. (formerly ZAMBIA Northern Rhodesia) still has seven JeWish families residing in the capital city of Lusaka. In its Copperbelt, Jews up to 1963 had estab- lished Jewish communities in Luanshya, Ndola, Muful- ira and Kitwe, but these communities are no longer the homes of Jews. EGYPT'S city of Alexandria, Egypt's major Mediterranean resort, is proud of a well-preserved synagogue standing on spa- cious grounds at 69 Nebi Daniel, a narrow street in the center of Alexandria's commercial area. Built in 1880 the congre- gation once numbered 30,000 Jews! Today, accord- ing to Clement Setton, president, there are slightly more than 100 Jews in Alexandria. (Women out- number men by 2-1). Unfortunately, the Egyp- tian government is seeking to make the synagogue into a museum which would preserve it but close it to use.
