were natural, that prom-
oted the well being of the
body, involved muscular
coordination and gave the
spectator harmless pleas-
ure. The Bible records 16
kinds of sports that were
most common. They include
archery, swimming, run-
ning, and weight lifting, ac-
tivities that are products of
the exuberance of a hardy
people.
There are specific
references to boxing in
the Talmud. This is not a
modern form of
entertainment, for it can
be traced directly to the
brutal Roman gladiator
contests.
The Rabbis warned
against attendance at • the
Roman circus, the theater,
and other institutions
where men were pitted in
violence against other men
or beasts for the pleasure of
the mobs. In fact, one Rabbi
of the first century went so
far as to say, "He who sits in
the stadium and observes
these bouts is guilty of
shedding blood."
Even though this is an ex-
treme statement, it gives
vent to the feeling that any
sport which involves vio-
lence and the shedding of
blood, such as boxing or
hunting, turns the stomach
of the Jew.

Let it first be noted that

BONN (JTA) — Israel's
Ambassador to West Ger-
many, Yitzhak Ben-Ari and
another member of the Is-
rael Embassy staff were se-
verely harassed by hecklers
at separate speaking
engagements in Munich
and Marburg last week.
Ben-Ari, addressing a
group in Munich on the
prospects for peace in the
Middle East, was re-
peatedly shouted down by
young members of the audi-
ence who hurled anti-Israel
slogans at the envoy. De-
spite the interruptions he
was able to complete his
prepared speech.
Embassy aide Dan
Ashbel fared less well in
Marburg where he ap-
peared before Protestant
students in a building
owned by their church.
Hours before Ashbel's arri-
val, several thousand
youngsters marched
through the city carrying
anti-Semitic banners and
proclaiming their support

TEL AVIV (ZINS) —
Matti Golan, writing in
Haaretz, believes that aliya
would create peace in the
Middle East. His theory is
that five million Jews in Is-
rael, instead of the present
3.5 million, would convince
the Arabs that time is not on
their side.
He said that the goal of
five million Jews in Israel
depends on the action of no
one but the Jewish people.

one of the three distinguish-
ing marks of the Jew. In the
Jewish pyramid of values,
compassion stood at the
highest point. The Talmud,
as well as the Bible, con-
tains passage after passage
dwelling on this theme
Conversely, cruelty is con-
sidered as the worst of all
the vices.
While there are injuries
in football and hockey,
their primary purpose is
to score goals and not
purposefully harm an
opponent. Injuries in
these sports are by-
products of physical ex-
ertion. Indeed, conscious
harm ("roughing") is
penalized.
It is never easy to ques-
tion the moral character of
our pleasure and
entertainment. Since, how-
ever, moral issues are not
defined by the convenient or
the inconvenient, the pleas-
ant and the annoying, but
reach to the division be-
tween good and evil, it is in
this balance that we must
weigh all human conduct
and activity.
The truth is that so long
as we openly sanction brut-
ality we cannot expect to re-
solve the terrifying conflicts
of the nuclear age in a
peaceful and orderly way.
We must look first to mod-
ifying our own individual
appetites for savagery.
