director of operations. He
reported that only physical
abuse, including sexual
abuse, was examined for
both Jewish and non-
Jewish families coming to
the JBFCS for help.
Seventy percent, or
about 1,800 families in the
study, were Jewish,
while the other 800 were
non-Jewish.
The study, covering the
agency's 1981 operations,
found that at least 84 per-
cent of the agency's
caseworkers questioned re-
ported at least one case of
family domestic violence.
The study found that 77
percent of the cases were
moderate — mostly sexual
abuse — defined as unac-
ceptable physical abuse but
not requiring medical at-
tention.
The study also found 13
percent of the 2,600 cases
involved severe physical
abuse, defined as requiring
medical attention; and
three percent required hos-
pitalization.
PersOnal testimony of
abuse was presented by an
Orthodox woman, who told
the conference that, in the
first six weeks of her mar-
riage, her husband slapped
her and pulled her hair. Her
husband apologized but, a
week later, he hit her hard
enough to make her black
and blue. The beatings con-
sistently became more se-
vere, she said.
She said she went to
her rabbi, who said to her
"What did you do to de-
serve such a beating?"
Eventually, she said she
sought and found refuge in

Poll Reveals
Rabin-Led Labor
Party Could Win

TEL AVIV (JTA) — A
public opinion poll con-
ducted for the Monitin
monthly magazine by the
Dahaf Research Institute
, says that if former Premier
Yitzhak Rabin headed a
Labor Alignment list in
Knesset elections now, the
Labor Party list would gain
nine seats giving it 56 in the
120-member house while
the Likud would lose seven
seats, dropping it to only 41
seats.
The poll shows that De-
fense Minister Ariel Sha-
ron's popularity as possible
Prime Minister has dropped
from 22 percent to 12 per-
cent. Foreign Minister Yit-
zhak Shamir's popularity
for the Premiership rose
from 13 percent in July/
August to 16 percent now.
President Yitzhak Navon's
chances rose from 12 to 15
percent.
