Shapiro Assures Rabbi Rosh Hashana Absence Won't Be Penalized
Concern expressed by
Rabbi M. Robert Syme of
Temple Israel over the set-
ting of the first day of Rosh
Hashana as the first day of
classes at the University of
Michigan next fall brought
an assurance from
President Harold Shapiro
that students will not be
penalized for absenteeism
on that day. Dr. Shapiro ex-
pressed regret that the set-
ting of the opening day was

In his concern over the
date set, Rabbi Syme wrote:
"Dear Doctor Shapiro:
"Several members of my
congregation have called
me to express their surprise
and disappointment that
the first day of classes in
1983 at the University of
Michigan is scheduled to
begin on the first day of
Rosh Hashana.
Christmas day or on Eas-
ter).
"In this situation, how-
ever, I must confess that I
am at a loss for words. I can
only hope that you did not
consult the Jewish calendar
when you gave permission
for classes to begin on Sept.
8, 1983.
"My appeal is made at
this early date in the hope
that the opening date of
classes will be changed, so
that no Jewish student
should be confronted with a
choice that no Christian
student has to make.
"May I hear from you at
your earliest convenience."
Dr. Shapiro replied:
"Dear Rabbi Syme:
"Thank you for your let-
ter regarding the fact that
the start of fall 1983 classes
coincides with Rosh
Hashana. I share your con-
cern about the unfortunate
timing of the 1983-1984
calendar; however, because
that does not conflict in
some way with the religious
observances of university
students. Education consid-
erations require that the
semester be of a certain
minimum length: for this
reason we are not always
able to alter our schedule for
religious holidays such as
Good Friday.
"I realize that special
problems may be in-
volved when a religious
holiday coincides with
the start of a term. Ac-
cordingly, careful efforts
will be made not to
penalize students simply
because they do not
attend class on Sept. 8
and 9, 1983, for religious
reasons. We are currently
developing procedures
for dealing with this situ-
ation; students will be in-
formed of the details be-
fore the end of classes in
April 1983.
"You can be assured that
the university will make
every effort to accommodate
students whose religious be-
liefs make class attendance
on a given day difficult for
them. I appreciate your let-
ting me know your views on
the importance of this mat-
ter."
It is certain that either
wise bearing or ignorant
carriage is caught, as men
take diseases, one of an-
other: therefore let men
take heed of their company.
