TliE' DETROIT JEWISH - NEWS UN Officials Call for a Palestinian State (Continued from Page 1) decide whom it wishes to recognize." Addressing a mass rally earlier, Sus's said the PLO's Central Council, at its meeting in Damascus last weekend, has "categorically rejected" President Reagan's Middle East peace plan "because it is a Zionist plan contrary to Palestinian and Arab interests." Protest Marks Partition Day JERUSALEM (JTA) — Stone throwing incidents and other public distur-_ bances erupted on the West Bank Monday as Palesti- nians, mainly youths demonstrated on the 35th anniversary of the United Nations partition resolu- tion of Nov. 29, 1947, which called for establishment of Jewish and Arab states in Palestine. Israeli officials said the incidents were minor, com- pared to demonstrations on the same occasion in prev- ious years. An Israeli policeman was injured by stone-throwers in Ramallah where reinforced security forces attempted to main- tain order. Curfews were imposed on the Dahaishe refugee camp south of Bethlehem after stone-throwing rampages and on the casbah in Nab- lus, following a student demonstration. Israeli soldiers fired tear gas bombs to disperse the crowds. Several schools closed earlier than usual. In Washington, a State Department spokesman had insisted the PLO's Central Council had not in fact rejected the Re- agan plan outright. He also said that Secre- tary of State George Shultz' meeting last week with Palestinian leaders, includ- ing two West Bank mayors expelled by Israel, was not the beginning of indirect talks with the PLO. Some of the group had met with PLO chief Yasir Arafat in Tunis last week while on their way to attend a conference at American University on "Palestinians Under Occupation." Last week, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak called on the PLO to unilat- erally recognize Israel. He said, "It is not advisable for the PLO to reject all initia- tives like Israel does." At the same time, Brit- ain's Prime Minister Mar- Blast Injures Israeli Soldiers TEL AVIV (JTA) — Three Israeli soldiers were wounded Tuesday when the armored personnel carrier in which they were travel- ling went over a mine north of Bhamdoun on the main Beirut-Damascus highway held by Israeli forces. The wounded soldiers were evacuated to hospitals in Israel. Israel radio said that Druze and Christian forces resumed their mutual shelling and firing in villages in the Bhamdoun area. 9 STOWE OPTICAL L.)
