Chief Rabbi Zolti Dead at 63

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi of
Jerusalem Rabbi Bezalel
Zolti died last week. He was
63.
A long-time member of
the Supreme Rabbinical
Court of Appeals, he was re-
garded as a foremost
halakhic expert, answering
written queries from rabbis
around the world.
As Chief Rabbi of
Jerusalem, Zolti triggered
controversy by insisting on
high standards of Sabbath
observance in the capital's
hotels. But the hoteliers
themselves came to respect

him in time for his consis-
tency and principled but
fair approach.
His learned works in
Halakha are called "Mis-
hnat Yaabetz" (acronym
for Yaacov Bezalel Zolti).
He also headed a
flourishing yeshiva in
Jerusalem, Yad Aharon,
and was rabbi for many
years of the Ohel Rivka
Congregation in the
Jerusalem suburb of Re-
havia where he resided.
Born in Vitebsk, Russia,
Zolti came to Palestine as a
boy and studied at the Heb-
ron Yeshiva.

Mabel" and "I Love My
Wife," his last big success.
He was a prominent fig-

ure in the restaurant busi-
ness for more than 20 years.
A Russian immigrant
with less than a high school
education, Mr. Kipness
began a career in the gar-
ment industry as a trucker's
helper and rose to become
the president of the Gar-
ment Center Trucking
Association. He began de-
signing and manufacturing
women's suits and dresses
under the firm names J.I.
Kipness, Inc., and Kipness
