A History of Appeasement for the Supporters of 'Evenhandedness'

By REV. FRANKLIN
LITTELL

National Institute on
the Holocaust

PHILADELPHIA — In
the early days of November
1938 the Nazis gave clear
indication that their inten-
tion for the Jewish people
was genocidal. Prodded into
violence by secret agents
and party hacks, the mobs
beat Jews on sight, broke
into and looted Jewish
businesses, burned syna-
gogues. Homes were rav-
aged. Some 20,000 Jewish
men were rounded up and
shipped off to concentration
camps for disturbing the
peace and order of the Third
Reich.
Of course Hitler had, in
"Mein Kampf' and in his
public orations, already
indicated his blazing hatred
of the Jewish people. But
the false prophets of that
day, like the false prophets
in this, assured the publics
of the several countries
threatened by Germany
that Hitler didn't really
mean what he said.
Just so have the false
prophets of appeasement in
recent years assured us that
Arafat and his thugs don't

really mean what they say.
The appeasement experts of
the U.S. State Department,
the George Balls and
Harold Saunders et al., rush
into the Washington Post,
the New York Times and
other leading newspapers
every two or three weeks to
tell us that the most recent
inflammatory speech or
murderous act by PLO ter-
rorists shouldn't be taken
seriously. How often have
we heard or read the phrase,
"inflated Arab oratory."
We can be thankful that
the Israeli police action
in Lebanon, which the
appeasement experts
and the yellow journals
tried to portray as World
War III, has for a time
removed the PLO para-
military forces from di-
rect access to the jugular
of the Free World. Unfor-
tunately no hard-headed
leadership was available,
and no competent strike
force, to stop the Nazi ter-
rorists before they as-
cended to power to be-
come a criminal govern-
ment.
In those days, too, the ap-
peasement experts and the
yellow press were evident.
The French right wing,
heavily anti-Semitic,
sabotaged the republic:
"Better Hitler than Leon
Blum!"
The reactionary wing of
the Tories combined with
the George Lansbury
(pacifist) wing of Labor to
block British aid to the
endangered Spanish Repub-
lic. The church which made
Hitler salonfahig with the
July 20, 1933, Concordat a
few months later blessed
Moorish mercenaries as
they landed from Africa to
assault and destroy the
Spanish people's first
chance at liberty and self-
government. .
All over Europe, and in
isolationist America as
well, the voices of com-
promise and appeasement
were dominant.
Kristallnacht was a
clear indication of how
the Nazis interpreted the
appeasers' capitulation
at Munich on Sept. 30.
Chamberlain and
Daladier had signaled
the spinelessness of the
British and French gov-
ernments in the face of
Nazi terrorism. The Nazis
knew then that they had a
free hand to go ahead
with open brutality, more
satisfying to their style
and kind. .
The Spanish Republic
was assaulted by traitors,
infiltrated and weakened by
disloyalists, and buried in a
cloud of hypocrisy uttered
by appeasers in the Free
World. The appeasement
experts of that day pro-'
claimed "non-intervention"
to be French and British
government policy, when
they knew full well that
Mussolini and Hitler were
aiding the Spanish fascists
in every way possible.
Today, the appeasers'
word is "even-handedness."
They claim to be "even-
handed" between the

Jewish state and those who
have sworn to destroy it.
They refuse to make a
choice between those whose
terrorist attacks kill un-
armed athletes, women
shoppers, school children,
diplomats and those who try
to preserve democratic pro-
cedures and the amenities
of civilized discourse.
their
"even-
In
handedness," which they
constantly press upon the
White House, the appeasers
refuse to side openly with
either the angels of life or
the angels of death. But
they take sides neverthe-
less, for the one who is
"even-handed" between the
genocidally-motivated and
his intended victim is siding
with the aggressor against
the victim.
Subconsciously, the
appeasers know that
they share the guilt of the
aggressor. How eagerly
European newspapers
that had been urging
"even-handedness" be-
tween Israel and the PLO
seized upon news of the
killings in the Beirut
camps! How dramati-
cally they accused "the
Jews" of having done the
killing! How quietly they
later let fall that the kil-
ling hadn't been done by
"the Jews" at all by
"rightwing Phalan.gists
allied with Israel." But of
course the Israelis were
there and should have
prevented the incident
(!)
Who should have pre-
vented the murder of Israeli
Olympic athletes in
Munich? Who should have
prevented the killing of
worshippers at synagogues
in Brussels, Paris, Vienna?
Who should have prevented
the bombing of Jewish
business places, the letter-
bombing of Jewish
businessmen and public
figures in cities from Italy to
Sweden?
None of these questions
gets asked by the appease-
ments experts. They are too
busy expressing their in-
dign.ation at the Israelis for

their police action against
the terrorists and their
training camps, at the IDF
for effective prophylactic
action.
Students of the Holocaust
speak of three chief figures
in the drama: the perpet-

rators, the victims . . . and
the spectators. After Kris-
tallnacht the appeasers, the
spectators who are deter-
mined to be "even-handed"
between the perpetrators
and the victims, are without

When will the diplomatic
circles of the Western world
and the major newspapers
cease to provide the ap-
peasement experts with
bases of operation and
channels to corrupt the pub-
lic mind?

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Governor-elect Mario
Cuomo told a State of Israel
