quests for burials of Jews on
legal holidays, as required
by state regulations, when
the cemeteries are usually

A native of Baltimore,
Ms. Gurwitz earned a Mas-
ters of Social Work from the
University of Maryland
School of Social Work and
Community Planning,
along with a certificate of
Jewish communal service
from the Baltimore Insti-
tute of Jewish Communal
Service. For her internship,
Ms. Gurwitz served at the
Bnai Brith International
Headquarters in Washing-
ton, D.C.
She also holds a masters
in Judaic studies from Bal-
timore Hebrew College and
has also taught Hebrew.
Meanwhile, the Coun-
cil announced that it has
endorsed a report by the
Leadership Conference
on Civil Rights. The
LCCR said it was pleased
with the voting record of
the 97th Congress on civil
rights legislation.
The Council has also sent
a letter of greetings to Yuri
Andropov, new secretary
general of the Soviet Union,
and asked him to re-
evaluate USSR emigration
policy and the case of
Jewish activist Anatoly
Shcharansky.
