Haig, Begin Confer in Israel

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Former U.S. Secretary of
State Alexander Haig met
with Premier Menahem
Begin Tuesday.
He told reporters after-
wards that they had a fruit-
ful discussion on the Middle
East and praised the pre-
mier for his dedication to
the security and interests of
the state of Israel and the
free world."
Haig, on a private trip to
Israel, was the first official
visitor received by Begin
after completion of the
seven-day (shiva) mourning
period for his wife, Aliza,
who died Nov. 14.
The former Secretary
of State also told report-
ers that the situation in
Lebanon has improved
and there is a "unique

KIAMESHA LAKE, N.Y.
(JTA) — Conservative
Judaism's new active pro-
gram in the spheres of reli-
gion and education in Israel
is aimed at strengthening
pluralism in that country
and guaranteeing the free-

Gerson Cohen, chancellor of
the Jewish Theological
Seminary of America and
Dr. David Gordis, executive
director of the Foundation

Cohen said "there is al-
ready religious pluralism in
Israel, but we are seeking to
make that pluralism per-
ceived."
Gordis, contrasting the
new dynamism of Conser-

with the passive stance of
the past, observed that "Ac-

all of Israel's citizens are as-

Haig was guest of honor
Monday at ceremonies in
Sde Boker marking the
ninth anniversary of the
death of former Premier
David Ben-Gurion. He
received an honorary
doctorate from Ben-
Gurion University of the
Negev in Beersheva.
In a short speech at the
ceremonies, Haig said re-
cent events in Lebanon pro-
ved that the enemies of
peace in the region have
been badly beaten. "Once
again the Soviets' inability
to suggest real solutions to
the crises for which they
were responsible has been
demonstrated in the open,"
he said. As a result, it is
clear now to peaceful coun-
tries that there is no alter-
native to good relations
with the U.S., Haig said.

Jewish Karate
Experts Ordered
Back on Team

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Two American women, ka-
rate champions, both denied
places on the United States
amateur Karate team for
refusing to participate in.
tryouts scheduled for Rosh
Hashana, have won federal
court orders that they be ac-
cepted as full team mem-
bers.
Lea Sukenik of New York
and Pam Glaser of Newton,
Mass. both had advised the
Karate Association that, as
observant Jews, they could
not join the tryouts. Be-
cause both were national
title winners, they were told
they would be given special
consideration for member-
ship.
But the Amateur Athletic
Union (AAU), which runs
the team, refused to abide
by the promise and the two
women champions took
their case to the federal
courts. Federal District
Court Judge Robert Carter
in New York and Federal
Court Judge Rya Zobel in
Newton have ordered the
two athletes be accepted as
full participating U.S. team
members.

most as rare as a well spent
