Germans See
Series on Nazis

W.

BONN — On Jan. 30,
1933, President Paul von
Hindenburg appointed
Adolf' Hitler chancellor of
Germany. Now almost 50
years after that day, the
German television network
ARD is broadcasting a 13-
part series "Europe _under
the Swastika." The series,
which began on Oct. 17,
concludes on Jan. 30, the
50th anniversary of that
fateful event.
That day the net-
work will air Istvan
Szabo's film "Mephisto," the
story of a famous German
actor who collaborated with
the Nazis. "Mephisto" won
the 1982 "Oscar" for Best
Foreign Film. .
ARD will rebroadcast the
American series
"Holocaust," which, when
first shown in Germany
several years ago generated
enormous impact. The net-
work has also scheduled
documentaries on Field
Marshal Erwin Rommel,
the Africa Corps hero who
later joined the anti-Hitler
resistance, and the crucial
Battle of Stalingrad, plus
mini-series on why Ger-
mans voted for Hitler, and
on economic conditions in
the Third Reich.
ZDF will also .broadcast
films about Nazi policies
toward literature, music
and art, Nazi propaganda,
plus a performance of Ber-
tolt Brecht's anti-Nazi sa-
tire "-Arturo Ui."
