West Bloomfield. MI 313-855-2099 Friday, November 19, 1982 55 "Dorms are high tech and high tech is Technion" stu- dent Ehud Saly told more than 400 guests and suppor- ters last week at the 34th annual dinner of the Detroit Chapter of the American Society for Technion-Israel Institute of Technology held at Adat Shalom Synagogue. Appealing on behalf of his fellow students at the Technion, Saly said two big concerns of the students there are dorms and student aid. He thanked the Detroit supporters for their con- tinuing aid, and added that a drive is on now to make more of a home atmosphere on campus. To do that he said, there is a need for recreation centers and clubs on campus. The evening's main speaker, Brig. Gen (res.), Benjamin Peled, substi- tuted for the scheduled speaker former Israel Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, who canceled his visit bec ause of what he called the "parliamen- tary situation in Israel." Praising the Technion for its graduates who become scientists, engineers and computer specialists, Peled called the Technion "The house from which we get skilled people- and- lauded what he said were its high standards of training. He added, "We are rich in the most important raw material — brain power. Now we need to start an in- ventory, to use our brain power to produce high tech products that we can use and sell competitively." The president of a huge Israeli computer concern, Peled said that "when Sili- con Valley started 25 years ago," referring to the area of California known for com- puter development, !Israel had the same assets, but didn't have the time or priority to see that far." He said it wasn't a mistake, but an oversight. He said many com- puter materials and components are man- ufactured in Israel, but the "sophisticated com- ponents are bought in the U.S. and Japan." He said now Israel is look- ing "for pr,ojects that will bridge the gap between basic research and applied research. "Israel doesn't need oil or steel, but huge amounts of grey cells. We need an environment to produce our ideas." In his remarks following the dinner, Joseph H. Jac- kier, dinner chairman, talked about the impor- tance of technology to Is- rael. He said, "Israel's secret weapon is not her military power. Her secret weapon is brain power." Dr. Joseph Epel, president of the Detroit chapter, reported the Philip Slomovitz Chair in Hebrew language at the Technion is nearly com- pleted. Epel also praised the work of the Technion 2000, , the young adult division of the Detroit Chapter, and Max Gill, field representa- tive for the Technion. The dinner was the occa- sion to pay tribute to the major contributors and celebrate the completion of the Benard L. Mass Michi- gan Dormitory on the Technion campus. In addi- tion to Maas, contributors of rooms in the dorm also were honored. Among them are: Theo- dore and Mina Bargman Foundation,. William M.
