tragedy. A merchant selling
briefcases casually told him
about Oskar Schindler and
the Schindlerjuden, and
that Los Angeles Schindler-
jude emerged as introducer
to the eminent Australian
novelist of one of the most
exciting rescue stories in
the history of Nazism.
The result is "Schindler's
List" (Simon and Schuster),
which tells the story of the
German Catholic who re-
scued 1,200 Jews from the
crematoria by claiming
them as his Juden who were
necessary for the manufac-
ture of munitions.
It was first in Cracow, Po-
land and then the plant op-
erated by Schindler in
which these Jews were em-
ployed was moved to
Moravia when the Nazis
were on the march to trans-
fer the Jews to the death
camps.
Keneally fascinated a
large audience at the
Jewish Community Cen-
ter on Tuesday with his
Schindler story, during
the Book Fair Session
sponsored by Hadassah.
He reiterated, in addenda
describing his thoroughly-
researched story, that there
is no way of knowing why
and how Schindler acted so
determinedly in his rescue
effort. His only basic expla-
nation is that Schindler,
who loved liquor and
women, was a hedonist.
Keneally has some basic
ideas resulting from his
many travels through Po-
land, Germany, Latin
American countries and the

United States, to seek out
and meet Schindlerjuden.
He found them wherever he
went. Detroit is an excep-
tion, although Hadassah
advertised in search of such
Juden.
Schindler is pointed to
by Keneally as proof that
generalizing is wrong,
that an entire nation
cannot be condemned,
that there were Right-
eous Gentiles in Germany
and in Poland as well. He
points to the Yad Vas-
hem's proof and the Ave-
nue of the Righteous in
Jerusalem in whose
ranks Schindler occupies
a major role.
In his comments to The
Jewish News, Keneally em-
phasized that there were
the courageous who did not
submit to Nazism, that
there were Germans and
Poles who helped rescue
Jews.
Inter alia, he commented
about Poland being the
