Poulenc and Pro- kofiev in the second concert of the Vivace Music Series 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Birmingham Temple. Varani is the artist-in- residence at Oakland Uni- versity, a post he has held since 1972. He has recently performed in Germany and South America and is re- cording the complete piano works of Poulenc. Varani made his debut at age 7 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He performed on Brazilian television and toured with the Brazilian National Symphony at age 10. He won first prize in the International Chopin Competition at age 18, and is the recipient of the Harold Bauer Award and the Michigan Foundation for the Arts Award. He studied in France and Austria and at Juilliard School. G A "THE CLUB" MK Challenges Government on Plight of the Falashas JERUSALEM (JTA) — The Israel government was challenged last week to im- plement measures on behalf of the Falashas, Ethiopia's black Jewish community now reportedly confined to "ghetto" camps in that country and neighboring Sudan. The issue was ad- dressed in an urgent agenda motion presented to the Knesset by Labor Align- ment MK Moshe Shahal. Shahal told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that he wanted to raise the matter four months ago but re- frained at the government's request because of the deli- cacy of the situation.
