Thanksgiving Service Marks
Milestones for the Levines

A founding family of
Temple Israel will be called
to the Torah at a special
service 11 a.m. Thursday,
Thanksgiving Day, to mark
their 83rd birthdays.
For Reuben Levine, it will
be Bar Mitzva Sheni, celeb-
rating the fact that he will
have surpassed the biblical
span of "three score years
and 10" with an additional
13 years.

For Goldie Levine, his life
companion for nearly 60
years, it will mark her Bat
Mitzva, an event that occurs
frequently today, but which
was unheard of during the
days she was growing up in
Kalamazoo.
The Levines taught
confirmation and high
school classes at Temple
Israel for many years.
This was preceded by 16
years on the faculty of
Temple Beth El.
Earlier yet, the Levines
taught at Cong. Shaarey
Zedek, and led the religious
school of the congregation
in Port Huron during the
three years they lived in
that community.
Hundreds of people, both
in Temple Israel and in the
community, have been stu-
dents of the Levines over
the years, and many of them
are still in contact.
Levine's original Bar
Mitzva was observed in
1913 at Cong. Nusach H'Ari
in Detroit. Mrs. Levine was
confirmed at the temple in
Kalamazoo in 1914.
Their children, Mr. and
Mrs. Louis (Ruth) Cassel
and Dr. and Mrs. Walter
(Linda) Levine, of
Eastchester, N.Y., will
join them at the service.
Also participating in the
service will be the Levines'
grandchildren, Judith and
David Kessler, Debra Cas-
sel and Saralyn; Suzanne
and Michael Levine. Family
and friends from all over the
country will be present, in-
cluding the Levines' great-
grandson, Joshua Kessler.
To mark the occasion, the

Levines are donating a
needlepoint set of the 12
Jerusalem windows by
Marc Chagall, which Mrs.
Levine has been preparing
for the last year.
The work represents the
latest in a series of contribu-
tions to the temple that
have been made consis-
tently over the past 40
years, since both Goldie and
Reuben Levine joined the
temple.
He served as president
of the Brotherhood in
1952 and 1953; organized
the annual Retreat series;
is a life member of the
JeWish Chautauqua
Society; and is currently
chairman of the temple
archives committee.
Goldie served as Sister-
hood vice president of reli-
gious activities, and for five
years gave a course on "The
Joys of Jewish Living."
Among their community
activities are membership
in the Jewish Historical
Society, of which Levine
served as treasurer,_ and
Mrs. Levine's life member-
ship in Hadassah. Levine
has long been active in the
Allied Jewish Campaign
and as a reader at Recording
for the Blind.
Before retirement in
1965, Levine was a sec-
tional office and budget
manager for General
Motors. Mrs. Levine was a
teacher and librarian in the
Detroit Public Schools.
