It is the sixth such project in the New York area to be spon- sored by JASA. Fifteen of the units will be designed and allocated for handi- capped residents and the rest for well elderly resi- dents. JASA was chosen by the city's Department of Hous- ing Preservation and De- velopment to sponsor the new apartment building. HUD (the Department of Housing and Urban De- velopment) has named Cooper Square Housing De- velopment Fund Corp., JA- SA's housing company, for the project, to receive, a di- rect loan of $9.1 million, under section 202 of the 1968 Federal Housing Act. Glick said HUD will also guarantee rent sub- sidies, under section eight of the Housing Act, for 40 years., to permit residents to live in the apartment house at rents they can afford. The resi- dents will pay about 30 percent of their annual income • as rent. Glick cited JASA's con, siderable experience in de- veloping and managing housing for the elderly and in providing services for them. He noted that JASA manages Brookdale Village in Far Rockaway, Queens, and three projects in Brook- lyn — Scheuer House of Coney Island, Scheuer House of Manhattan Beach and Friendset Apartments. An additional JASA apart- ment project, in Brooklyn's Brighton Beach, is accept- ing applications and expects to be open in a few months for occupancy. "Today I do know that in Auschwitz a large number of Jews were killed only be- cause they were Jewish," Manfred Roeder said in a written statement to a Frankfurt court. Roeder, 53, a former lawyer, was sentenced last June to 13 years imprison- ment for heading a rightw- ing terrorist group and in- citement against Jews. Frankfurt prosecutor Volkmar Schneider ap- peared skeptical of Roeder's recantation. "Maybe he is showing something like in- sight," the attorney said. But another possibility is that he wants to convince the courts to free him after he serves two-thirds of his sentence. "He will surely lose the support of his fol- lowers," Schneider ob- served.
